9 Films Left for Best Foreign Language Film Oscar! Check Out Shortlist!

Round two! Previously, the Academy has announced 63 films vying for Oscar glory, and then there was 9. My home-country, the Philippines, failed to make it. Their submission, "The Women in the Septic Tank" by Marlon Rivera did not make the cut although the film is one of the best of 2011 in Philippine Cinema.

Some early favorites that did not make the shortlist are "The Flowers of War" from China, "The Kid with a Bike" from Belgium (they nominated another Belgian movie called "Bullhead," and one of the most famous snubs from perennial award favorite, Pedro Almodovar, "The Skin I Live In" from Spain. Heck they even ignore Angelina Jolie's Bosnian film "In the Land of Blood and Honey" which received a Golden Globe nomination.

From the 9 shortlist, the Academy will have specially invited committees in New York and Los Angeles where they will watch three movies each day from Friday, January 20, through Sunday, January 22. Then...they will cast their ballots.

We'll find out the final five when the 84th Academy Awards nominations are announced on Tuesday, January 24, at 5:30 a.m.

And of course, the Oscars will be presented on Sunday, February 26, at the Kodak Theatre.

And here are the films, listed in alphabetical order by country:

Belgium, "Bullhead," Michael R. Roskam, director;
Canada, "Monsieur Lazhar," Philippe Falardeau, director;
Denmark, "Superclásico," Ole Christian Madsen, director;
Germany, "Pina," Wim Wenders, director;
Iran, "A Separation," Asghar Farhadi, director;
Israel, "Footnote," Joseph Cedar, director;
Morocco, "Omar Killed Me," Roschdy Zem, director;
Poland, "In Darkness," Agnieszka Holland, director;
Taiwan, "Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale," Wei Te-sheng, director.

Some U.K. Moviegoers Want "The Artist" Refund! They Hate Silent Movies! Argh!

Can you believe this? It was widely known, I thought, that "The Artist" was a black-and-white SILENT film! But apparently, in some faraway place like the U.K. (HA!) in a little known town called Liverpool, some moviegoers had no clue that "The Artist" was a silent movie!

According to the Hollywood Reporter, "moviegoers in Liverpool demanded a refund after discovering it was a silent movie." The U.K.'s biggest theater chain, Odeon and UCI Cinemas, gave refunds to a handful of customers who had no freaking idea that "The Artist" was beautifully silent!

Now I hope this doesn't start a trend here in the U.S. Let me repeat it again, "THE ARTIST" IS A BEAUTIFUL, SILENT FILM, ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES OF 2011, AND FOR A SILENT MOVIE, THIS HAS A LOT TO SAY!

There you have it.

I'm interviewing James Cromwell tomorrow, this may be a good conversation piece :)

"Haywire" Movie Review -- How Many Kisses Does Gina Carano Get?

Academy Award-winning director Steven Soderbergh is a prolific filmmaker. He has made nearly 28 movies in just 25 years. Some of his films were good like “Traffic,” “Erin Brockovich,” and his groundbreaking “sex, lies, and videotape.”

But some movies in Soderbergh’s oeuvre were just okay such as “The Good German” and “Full Frontal.” His latest film, the female-driven espionage thriller “Haywire,” falls somewhere in the middle. It’s a riveting action thriller with a formulaic plot.

The main character is Mallory Kane (played by MMA superstar Gina Carano), a highly trained operative working for a government security contractor. The CIA trained her then betrayed her. Sounds familiar? It is like a female “Bourne” movie except Mallory remembers everything.

But what keeps the film ticking along is Carano herself. Making her big blockbuster debut, the actress known as the “Face of Women’s Mixed Martial Arts” is predictably adept with her action scenes but also surprisingly holds her own against seasoned co-stars like Ewan McGregor and Michael Fassbender.
