Sean Penn and Robert Pattinson are in talks with Fox 2000 for the Depression-era drama "Water for Elephants."
Francis Lawrence ("I Am Legend") is set to direct from a script being written by Richard LaGravenese ("P.S. I Love You").
Reese Witherspoon is already committed to work on the film.
Variety told us that the film is "based on Sara Gruen's best-selling historical tome of the same name, story centers on a Cornell U. veterinary student who leaves his studies after his parents are killed and joins up with the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth, working as a vet for the circus. Witherspoon will play Marlena, the beautiful equestrian star married to August (Penn), the charismatic but twisted animal trainer."
No word yet on what role Pattinson is in talks to play.

The great Martin Scorsese is making his first foray into children's literature! The director is under negotiations with GK Films to direct the best-selling book "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" by Brian Selznick.
Winner of the 2008 Randolph Caldecott Medal, the story is set in 1930s Paris and revolves around a 12 year old orphan named Hugo who lives in a train station and must fix a broken robot to fulfill his late father's wish.
John Logan adapted the screenplay. The writer previously worked with Scorsese for "The Aviator." The film is being put on the fast track with a June 1 start date in London.
