$76.5 million -- that's the opening box-office take of "I Am Legend." While the film was just okay (great intro and set-up, shlocky conclusion), apparently, people really, really love sci-fi flicks about last men on earth, and they really, really love Will Smith!
It's the biggest December opening ever, and a personal best for Smith!
Another good news but filed under "who knew" category is "Alvin and the Chipmunks" debuted at number 2 with $45 million bucks! Who knew Alvin and company are still loved?
Meanwhile, "Atonement" pulled in $1.85 million in just 117 theaters. Very impressive!
Overall business soared, with the top 12 movies taking in $153.6 million, up 39 percent from the same weekend a year earlier, when Smith also was No. 1 with a $26.5 million debut for "The Pursuit of Happyness."
