Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp could not beat the great lion Aslan. "The Tourist" starring the world's biggest stars failed to capture the No. 1 crown from "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader." (Interviews with Georgie Henley and Will Poulter from "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader)
The third film in the "Narnia" series scored another No. 1 hit for the franchise earning $24.5 million for the weekend even though it's decidedly lower compared to the other "Narnia" movies.
The first film, "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," is still the biggest opener with $65.6 million and nearly $300 million total. The second, "Prince Caspian," opened at No. 1 with $55 million and swashbuckled to $141 million.
"The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" was not as successful as the first two, but it still opened at No. 1. Creatively? The first film is still the best of the series, followed by "Dawn Treader" with "Prince Caspian" lagging behind. ("The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" movie review)
Lagging behind was the inept and lifeless "The Tourist" featuring Jolie and Depp in a ho-hum mystery that featured zero chemistry between the two stars. Apparently, viewers agreed and only gave the film a No. 2 opening with a very lackluster $17 million take. With a supposed $100 million budget, "The Tourist" would need millions of traveler's checks just to break even.
At No. 3 was "Tangled" with $14.6 million. The lovely Disney animated wonder has just crossed the $115 million mark this weekend. ("Tangled" movie review)
Meanwhile, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1" finished at No. 4 with $8.5 million and is closing in on the $260 million mark domestically. ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1" movie review)
And it's the Oscar season, and two of the biggest Academy Award baits enjoyed box-office moolah. Fox Searchlight's "Black Swan" landed in No. 6 with $3.3 million in just 90 theaters y'all! ("Black Swan" movie review)
Opening in just four theaters was "The Fighter" featuring Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg in a boxing family drama. I love this movie, and Bale WILL WIN BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR OSCAR! "The Fighter" made a strong $80,000 per theater and will expand into 2,000 theaters on December 17.
