"Rise of the Planet of the Apes" Holds No. 1 Position, "The Help" Surprises, "Glee" Flops!

In a crowded box-office weekend, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" continued to dominate the box-office finishing at No. 1 for its second weekend. Starring James Franco, the 20th Century Fox release earned $27.5 million and has raised its 10-day domestic total to $104.9 million.

"The Help," one of the new entries at the box-office, surprised everyone with a strong debut. Based on the beloved book by Kathryn Stockett, "The Help" was helped by ardent fans which propelled the film to open at No. 2 with $25.5 million. Since opening Wednesday, the DreamWorks release distributed by Disney has sold $35.4 million tickets.

The New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. horror sequel "Final Destination 5" also had a great box-office showing, opening at No. 3 with $18.4 million. The film drew 75% of its grosses from 3D locations, which is good news since most films that opened this summer failed to match what "Final Destination 5" has accomplished in 3D.

Speaking of 3D, "Glee" fell flat! Fox was having a good weekend with "Apes" and a terrible one with "Glee." The 3D concert movie could not even muster to join Top 10, finishing at No. 11 with just $5.7 million.

Sony was also having a good and bad weekend. Good because "The Smurfs" slipped to No. 4 with $13.5 million but has entered the $100 million club! Its three-week total now stands at $101.5 million. Smurfs that!

But Sony's action-comedy caper "30 Minutes or Less" starring Jesse Eisenberg opened weakly at No. 5 with just $13 million. From Ruben Fleischer, the guy who gave us the fantastic "Zombieland," "30 Minutes or Less" was a bit dull in parts, funny sometimes, but at least the film zipped through its running time of 85 minutes or less.
