Is Steven Soderbergh Quitting Hollywood to Become a Painter?

Say it isn't so! Steven Soderbergh, one of the few contemporary Hollywood directors who can make art films and blockbusters (sometimes together) simultaneously, is thinking of quitting Hollywood for good to be an artist! A painter! In the mold of the abstract painter Agnes Martin!

This rumor leaked out earlier this year which Soderbergh said had gotten "blown out of proportion" and blamed actor/pal Matt Damon (apparently, he couldn't keep a secret!). But according to the Huffington Post by way of a New York Times article:

...the 48-year-old director spoke plainly about his intention to take up the brush. "I'm interested in exploring another art form while I have the time and ability to do so," he told the paper. "I'll be the first person to say if I can't be any good at it and run out of money I'll be back making another 'Ocean's' movie."

Yeah, but Soderbergh is a very creative person and those folks need release for their talent other than what they're doing now, ala James Franco right?

Soderbergh has already taken up painting and even showcased his work to the New York Times. So I hope, Soderbergh is just finding another outlet for his boundless creativity and NOT quit filmmaking 'cause he's really, really good at it!

These rumors have a way of spreading like virus! Oh, speaking of virus, Soderbergh's latest opus (Starring Damon, HA!) about the global spread of a flulike virus opens nationwide next Friday, Sept. 9th.
