Welcome Back Tom Cruise! "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" Tops Christmas Box-Office

Paramount's "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" led the very busy Christmas weekend at the movies! The Tom Cruise vehicle landed at no. 1 with an estimated $46.2 million for the four-day Holiday weekend. So far, the fourth installment of the popular franchise has taken in $78.6 million in domestic total and a worldwide sum of $218.6 million. Yup, it's safe to say that "MI4" accomplished its impossible mission -- to make Cruise cool again! (My interview with director Brad Bird right here, and with Simon Pegg right here)

Meanwhile, the "Sherlock Holmes" sequel came out of the shadows and bounced back, regaining its momentum at No. 2 with $31.8 million. At No. 3 was "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" with $20 million.

"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," the David Fincher adaptation of the popular Stieg Larsson novel opened at No. 4 with a healthy $19.4 million debut, and rounding out the Top 5 was "The Adventures of Tintin" from director Steven Spielberg and producer Peter Jackson. The animated tale scored a $16.1 million opening for Paramount.

Speaking of Spielberg, his "War Horse" galloped at No. 7. In just two days (it opened Christmas Day), the war drama about a friendship between a boy and his horse opened with $15 million.
