Romantics Swoon Over "The Vow" with $41.7 Million, "Journey 2" Dominates International Box-Office 


Just in time for Valentine's Day, the romantic drama "The Vow" starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams won the weekend box office with a No. 1 debut with $41.7 million opening! ("The Vow" movie review)

At No. 2 was the action thriller "Safe House" starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds. The Universal flick opened with $39.3 million.

Debuting at No. 3 was the sequel "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island." Starring Dwayne Johnson, Josh Hutcherson, Vanessa Hudgens, and Michael Caine, the action adventure opened domestically with a strong $27.6 million. But international fans catapulted the 3D film to No. 1 with $25.5 million while "The Vow" opened at No. 5 with $9.7 million. But the "Star Wars" 3D re-release, "The Phantom Menace," failed to match the 3D re-release of "The Lion King." "Star Wars" only managed to make $23 million domestically and $20.5 million internationally. Disney's re-release of "The Lion King" roared with $30.2 million in September.
