"The Lorax" Beats "John Carter," Eddie Murphy Stumbles

"John Carter" was virtually ignored!

This past weekend at the box-office, "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax" continued to shine while the out-of-this-world adventure, "John Carter," failed to match expectations or its reported $250 million budget!

The Walt Disney extravaganza from director Andrew Stanton ("Wall-E," "Finding Nemo") only managed $30.6 million at the box-office, landing at No. 2. ("John Carter" movie review right here, and enter to win "John Carter" prizes right here)

Taylor Kitsch and company could not match the excitement surrounding Universal's "The Lorax" featuring the voices of Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, Betty White, and Danny Devito.

Based on Dr. Seuss' beloved classic, "The Lorax" maintained its No. 1 position for the second week in a row with $39.1 million. So far, the animated film about the beauty of our environment has made $122 million. ("Dr. Seuss' The Lorax" movie review right here)

And who knew that a found footage film about a wild party would be a hit? The Warner Bros. teen comedy "Project X" continued to party rock at the box-office finishing at No. 3 with $11.6 million and raising its domestic total to $40.1 million.

At No. 4 was the Elizabeth Olsen thriller, "Silent House," which debuted at 7.01 million. But the Eddie Murphy craptacular flick, "A Thousand Words," flopped at No. 6 with $6.4 million. This was finished in 2008 and Paramount kept it in their closet until now. They should have kept in the closet until all leaves from all the trees fell. Why would Murphy return to the loving arms of his "Norbit" and "Meet Dave" director Brian Robbins?

The best box-office news this past weekend was that revenues were up 8.7 percent from the same weekend last year according to Hollywood.com.

And to help soothe the pain of "John Carter's" under-performance, Walt Disney Pictures revealed that "John Carter" opened well in 55 markets internationally, making $70.6 million with a worldwide total of $101.2 million. Good, but still far from its gargantuan budget!
