Tom Cruise, Adam Sandler No Match for "Madagascar 3!"

Tom Cruise's "Rock of Ages" and Adam Sandler's "That's My Boy" failed to dethrone "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted." Everyone came in to the weekend knowing that the animated threequel would beat competition, but no one predicted it would be really dismal for both Cruise and Sandler. ("Madagascar 3" interview with Jada Pinkett Smith)

"Rock of Ages," a winning adaptation of the Broadway musical, landed at No. 3 with a disappointing $15.1 million. Directed by Adam Shankman, Cruise gave a memorable performance as rock star Stacee Jaxx. Featuring Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Catherine Zeta Jones, Malin Akerman, Paul Giamatti, Alec Baldwin, and Russell Brand, go watch "Rock of Ages." Previous weekend's box-office bonanza, "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" held on the No. 1 position with $35.5 million! We'll see how it squares off with the new animated tale from Disney/Pixar "Brave" which will open next weekend.

"Prometheus" also held its No. 2 position with $20.2 million. This is a good sci-fi flick, a prequel of sorts to "Alien" from director Ridley Scott.

Sandler's much-maligned "That's My Boy" (yes it's bad, it makes "Jack and Jill" look like "Citizen Kane!") failed to even beat Kristen Stewart's "Snow White & The Huntsman" which placed at No. 4 with $13.8 million. "That's My Boy" settled to No. 5 with just $13 million. Sure it's R-rated, but it's the weakest opener for any Sandler movie!

But Phil Contrino, boxoffice.com editor, told E! that "Rock of Ages" has a better shot of salvaging its run. It has the makings of a cult hit (that's true!) Contrino said, and a good alternative for action flicks populating summer moviegoing.

The good news this summer? Two indie-flicks continue to over-perform! "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" placed at No. 8 with $2.2 million while the excellent "Moonrise Kingdom" from writer/director Wes Anderson took the No. 9 spot with $2.18 million. Hurray!

Here's the estimated Top 10 box-office films for weekend of June 15th:

1. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, $35.5 million
