So, Will "The Big Short" Win Best Picture Oscar?

With "The Big Short" winning the Producers Guild Award, it's safe to say the film is now the frontrunner beating awards season darlings like "Spotlight," "The Revenant," and "Mad Max: Fury Road," and lording over the rest of the nominees such as "Bridge of Spies," "Brooklyn," "Ex Machina," "The Martian," "Sicario," and "Straight Outta Compton." (see full list of PGA winners below)

If you're not on the "Big Short" camp like I am (I'm still rooting for "Spotlight"), then you have to be nervous. Like I am.

Why?

Because the PGA winner has gone on to win Best Picture at the Oscars for the last eight years for films such as “Birdman,” “12 Years a Slave,” “Argo,” “The Artist,” “The King’s Speech,” “The Hurt Locker,” “Slumdog Millionaire” and “No Country for Old Men.”

Indeed, the PGA has matched the Oscars in 19 of its 26 years!

But I wasn't a "Big Short" fan! I embraced it, I thought it was good, and I thought it would make for a great story for director Adam McKay, graduating from the wacky immature comedies of the "Anchorman" films, and growing up to be an astute filmmaker.

But I still love "Spotlight" more! Heck, "Mad Max: Fury Road" too! Or even "Star Wars: The Force Awakens!"

PGA has a knack for stopping the upward trajectory of Oscar frontrunners. In recent years, PGA winner "The King's Speech" halted the critical darling "The Social Network." And guess which one won Best Picture at the Oscars?

How about "Birdman" winning the PGA and pushed "Boyhood" into just being loved by critics but not the Academy?

One thing's for sure. On Oscar night, I will be biting my nails until they announce the Best Picture winner. I still have high hopes for Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight!" A critic can dream, right?
