NEW FILM BASED ON "NO COUNTRY" AUTHOR'S BOOK!

He's being called as one of America's greatest living writers and now, Cormac McCarthy is also busy with award circuits thanks to "No Country for Old Men."

Another of McCarthy's bestselling novels, "The Road" is being adapted for the big screen, and Charlize Theron just signed on, joining Viggo Mortensen in the lead!

The story is about a man who embarks on a nightmarish road trip after a nuclear explosion in an attempt to transport his son to safety while fending off cannibals!

Sounds intriguing!

Director John Hillcoat will helm the production based on a screenplay by Joe Penhall.

PRODUCERS GUILD OF AMERICA SNUBS "SWEENEY" AND "ATONEMENT"

It's shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable awards seasons yet! The front-runners, "No Country for Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood" were both snubbed at the Golden Globes.

Now, the Producers Guild of America (PGA) released its nominations without both the Golden Globes best picture winners -- "Sweeney Todd" (best picture comedy/musical) or "Atonement" (best picture drama).

This is a bad sign for both films since the PGA is a strong barometer for best picture Oscars.

The winner of the PGA's Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year award will be announced Feb. 2 in ceremonies at the Beverly Hilton.

Don't worry, the event is not telecast, so it won't be picketed!

NEW PICTURES FROM "THE DARK KNIGHT" AKA THE NEW "BATMAN"

I'm in a comic book mood today! And FYI -- I'm a fanboy at heart! I'm always the first in line at Comic Con!!!

And of course, I love "Batman Begins!" Director Christopher Nolan did such an amazing job in rebooting the franchise!

So I'm very thrilled and excited to watch the new "Batman" film simply called "The Dark Knight."

Here are some useful nuggets:

*** Christopher Nolan returns as the film's helmer, and he also co-wrote the script with his brother, Jonathan Nolan. The last film the brothers wrote together was the mesmerizing "The Prestige."

*** Christian Bale (Bruce Wayne/Batman), Michael Caine (Alfred Pennyworth), Gary Oldman (Lt. James Gordon), Morgan Freeman (Lucius Fox), and Cillian Murphy (Scarecrow) return to reprise their respective roles.

*** Joining the cast are Heath Ledger as The Joker, Maggie Gyllenhaal replacing Katie Holmes for the same role as Rachel Dawes, Eric Roberts as Salvatorre Maroni, and Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent (the same role Tommy Lee Jones played in the horrible "Batman Forever")

*** The film opens on July 18, 2008

*** Here's the plot: "Batman raises the stakes in his war on crime. With the help of lieutenant Jim Gordon and district attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to dismantle the remaining criminal organizations that plague the city streets. The partnership proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a reign of chaos unleashed by a rising criminal mastermind known to the terrified citizens of Gotham as the Joker."

NEW "THE INCREDIBLE HULK" PICTURES!!!!

I enjoyed the critically-lambasted film by Ang Lee starring Eric Bana as the Hulk. So now, I'm anxiously waiting the sequel starring Edward Norton as Bruce Banner.

First the facts:

*** Liv Tyler (Betty Ross), Tim Roth (Emil Blonsky), and William Hurt (Gen. Thaddeus 'Thunderbolt' Ross) co-star!

*** Edward Norton co-wrote the script with Zak Penn (he wrote "X-Men: The Last Stand" and "Fantastic Four" among others -- not a good sign).

*** The film opens June 13, 2008

*** It's directed by Louis Leterrier, the French director who gave us "The Transporter" films and "Danny the Dog."

*** The working title is "The Incredible Hulk."

*** Here's the plot from IMDB: "The explosive, action-packed adventure in one of the all-time most popular superhero sagas unfolds with a cure in reach for the world's most primal force of fury: THE INCREDIBLE HULK. We find scientist Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) living in shadows, scouring the planet for an antidote. But the warmongers who dream of abusing his powers won't leave him alone, nor will his need to be with the only woman he has ever loved, Betty Ross (Liv Tyler). Upon returning to civilization, our brilliant doctor is ruthlessly pursued by The Abomination (Tim Roth) -- a nightmarish beast of pure adrenaline and aggression whose powers match The Hulk's own. A fight of comic-book proportions ensues as Banner must call upon the hero within to rescue New York City from total destruction. And on June 13, 2008, one scientist must make an agonizing final choice -- accept a peaceful life as Bruce Banner or the creature he could permanently become: THE INCREDIBLE HULK."

"PULP FICTION" WRITER ARRESTED AFTER FATAL CRASH

Alright, I don't normally report gossip stuff like this, but Roger Avary is a big part of the movie culture, and this new, developing details about his life are just sad, sad, sad.

But, Oscar-winning screenwriter Roger Avary was arrested Sunday on suspicion of manslaughter and driving under the influence after a Ventura County car crash that killed a man and injured Avary's wife, authorities said.

MSNBC is reporting that Avary, 42, was the driver in the single-car collision shortly after midnight in Ojai, said Captain Ross Bonfiglio of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department.

Killed in the accident was Andreas Zini, 34, a resident of Italy who was apparently visiting the couple. Firefighters cut Zini from the car with Jaws of Life and he died several hours later at Ventura County Medical Center.

Avary's wife Gretchen, 40, was ejected from the car and found in the road by deputies, Bonfiglio said. She was hospitalized in stable condition.

Avary was booked but later released on $50,000 bail, Bonfiglio said. He did not know whether Avary has hired an attorney.

Avary won an Academy Award along with Quentin Tarantino for writing "Pulp Fiction," and was also a co-writer of the recent epic "Beowulf."
