"Paul Blart: Mall Cop" Nabs Top Box-Office Spot! 


Who knew the Kevin James-starrer "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" would be the No. 1 film at the box-office? The PG-rated comedy made $33.8 million in its first three days and is predicted to reach $40 million over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.

Last week's No. 1 flick, "Gran Torino" fell to second place making $22.2 million. The Clint Eastwood-flick fell only by 25 percent.

The Lionsgate horror flick "My Bloody Valentine 3-D" opened at No. 3 with $21.9 million.

Meanwhile, "Notorious," the film about the life and times of Notorious B.I.G. debuted at No. 4 with $21.5 million.

The week's other new wide release, the Paramount family comedy "Hotel for Dogs," opened at No. 5 with $17.7 million.

From the 1953 classic chiller “House of Wax” to the 1982 slasher “Friday the 13th Part III,” Hollywood has relied on 3-D technology to heighten shock and suspense. The primeval nature of the horror genre is synonymous with the stereoscopic visuals.

So when I heard Lionsgate was releasing a 3-D reimagining of the 1981 horror flick “My Bloody Valentine,” I was excited. I was, and still am, a fan of the genre, and I specially liked the original film which Quentin Tarantino called “the best slasher movie of all time.”

"Slumdog Millionaire" Leads BAFTA Nominations 


As predicted, "Slumdog Millionaire" leads the pack of nominees for the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Awards. The Danny Boyle-directed film has 11 nominations total.

Ricardo Montalban, the fantastic actor who played Mister Roarke in "Fantasy Island" and Khan in "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan," passed away at 88.
