"Spider-Man" fans, start sending nasty emails to Columbia Pictures!
The studio has scrapped plans for "Spider-Man 4!" Why? So it can make a younger, cheaper reboot!
Variety tells us that "star Tobey Maguire and helmer Sam Raimi, who were both set for big paydays for "Spider Man 4," will no longer be involved in the franchise as Col moves forward with a high school-aged Peter Parker pic, which will bow theatrically in summer 2012."
Why is Columbia acting so haphazardly? Because the studio needs to move forward with developing "Spider-Man" films or the property will revert back to Disney/Marvel!
Columbia revealed last week that "Spider-Man 4" was on hold indefinitely, which prompted Paramount to move "Thor" to its original May 6, 2011 planned release date.
Variety further reveals:
The studio has long prepared for the contingency of "Spider Man 4" falling apart and already has a James Vanderbilt-penned script about a teenage Peter Parker ready to shoot. That film, which has no director or star attached, is now in preproduction. The new version will likely cost far less than a "Spider Man 4" given that Columbia, which has a mandate not to give away more than 25% of the gross, won't be paying the high salaries or gross points to returning talent.
This is lame, lame, lame! I think the reason why the "Spider-Man" franchise was successful was because of the great tandem between Raimi and Maguire. Now, our webslinging hero will be back in high school and will continue to ponder human problems.
Huh?
But Raimi seems to be taking it all in stride. The director says, "while we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job."
Raimi is probably tired of the franchise already, but still, count me out of the new "Spider-Man" flick. I ain't buying it!
Columbia is currently looking for a new actor and director for their planned reboot.

Tom Hanks is set to direct and co-star with Julia Roberts in "Larry Crowne." Hanks also wrote the script! I'm very impressed!
There's no studio attached to distribute the project yet, but Variety tells us that the "story centers on a middle-aged man being forced to find a new career."
Hhhhmmm, is Hanks writing from experience?
The last film Hanks and Roberts appeared together was 2007's "Charlie Wilson's War" and the previous movie the actor directed was "That Thing You Do" in 1996.

Paramount revealed some exciting news. First, "G.I. Joe" is making a comeback! The studio is currently negotiating with "Zombieland" scriptwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to write the script to the sequel.
This may be good, since Reese and Wernick proved in "Zombieland" that they know plot build-up and character development -- two things missing in the first "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra."
Reese and Wernick are currently busy writing the "X-Men" spinoff "Deadpool."
And the second exciting news from Paramount? "Star Trek" sequel will beam into theaters on June 29, 2012 just in time for our 4th of July weekend.
The WGA Awards-nominated writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have joined forces with "Lost" co-creator Damon Lindelof to pen the script.
For now, J.J. Abrams has signed-on to produce the sequel, but no word yet if he's returning to direct.

The Writers Guild of America has announced nominations for outstanding achievement in writing for the screen during the past year. Winners will be honored at the 2010 Writers Guild Awards held on Saturday, February 20, 2010, at simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York.
Some interesting notes:
Not one but two sci-fi films received noms -- "Avatar" written by James Cameron and "Star Trek" written by Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman
"Inglourious Basterds" was NOT nominated! Huh?
"The Hangover" yay!
"Julie and Julia" honestly? I loved the Julia Child part, but the Julie Powell part dragged the whole film for me.
And kudos to Michael Moore's "Capitalism: A Love Story." The documentary was not included in the Academy longlist, but received a writing nomination.
