Finally, "True Grit" Shoots Past Competition, Takes Box-Office Crown!

Bullseye for "True Grit!" The Coen brothers remake took the No. 1 spot to become the first Western to reach the magical $100 million mark since the 1990s.

Starring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Hailee Steinfeld, "True Grit" has sold $110.4 million box-office tickets. ("True Grit" movie review, interview with Barry Pepper)

Previous weekend's box-office champ, Universal's "Little Fockers" fell to No. 2 with $13.8 million. The threequel starring Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro has made $124 million, the lowest of the "Meet the Parents" franchise.

And not even Nicolas Cage's blond locks could save "Season of the Witch." The supernatural thriller failed to dominate the box-office and instead debuted at No. 3 with $10.7 million.

Here's the Top 10 Box-Office Films list for weekend of Jan. 7:

1. "True Grit," $15 million.

2. "Little Fockers," $13.8 million.

3. "Season of the Witch," $10.7 million.

4. "Tron: Legacy," $9.8 million.

5. "Black Swan," $8.4 million.

6. "Country Strong," $7.3 million.

7. "The Fighter," $7 million.

8. "The King's Speech," $6.811 million.

9. "Yogi Bear," $6.81 million.

10. "Tangled," $5.2 million.

Will Elijah Wood Show Up as "Frodo" in "The Hobbit?"

Elijah Wood is in talks to return to Middle Earth in Peter Jackson's adaptation of "The Hobbit." According to TheOneRing.Net, "the plans are to feature Frodo in the opening sequence of the films. It is unlikely that studio Warner Bros. or Team Jackson would change the script at this point in response to the web buzz so we may have just “spoiled” December 2012 for some, but we warned you."

So, although Frodo doesn't appear on the book, it appears Jackson and company will frame the movie with Frodo's narration. The main character of "The Hobbit" is Bilbo Baggins to be played by Martin Freeman.

"Emily Rose" Director Wants to Fight "Goliath!"

Scott Derrickson, the guy who gave us "The Exorcism of Emily Rose," wants to direct a new take on the David vs. Goliath Biblical tale according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Like "300," this one will be a period action movie with contemporary flair. The plot follows warrior Goliath as he is sent to track down a young shepherd named David who is foretold to be the king of the Israelites. What follows next is a battle of Biblical proportions.
