Angelina Jolie to play Kay Scarpetta BUT This One's Not Based on the Books!

As we told you last April, Angelina Jolie has teamed up with FOX 2000 and author Patricia Cornwell. The studio is hoping to develop Cornwell's Dr. Kay Scarpetta book series for the actress.

But now, The Los Angeles Times told us that FOX 2000 has "decided to jettison the books in favor of an origins story written directly for the screen. Set in the present day (as opposed to the late 1980s, when the series begins), the film will feature a distinctly younger Scarpetta in the years before she becomes the steely, unassailable expert pathologist she is today."

So is Cornwell supporting the studio's decision? And who is writing the screenplay? The LA Times continued that:

In a recent phone interview, Cornwell said her meeting with Jolie last spring on the set of "Salt," the actress' latest thriller, was crucial to getting the character back on track for a film incarnation. And no, the author doesn't object to the original screenplay approach. The script has been entrusted to little-known Irish screenwriter Kerry Williamson, who won the plum assignment over a slew of better-known scribes with her vision of a Scarpetta who hasn't fully come into her own yet.

This is a good financial decision for everyone involved. If the origins story proved to be a hit with moviegoers, then, the filmmakers can go back to the series of books for more Scarpetta inspirations!

From Brothel Owner to Blackbeard, Ian McShane in Talks for "Pirates of the Caribbean 4"

"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" may have found its villain! Ian McShane is in negotiations to play legendary pirate Blackbeard for the fourth installment of the pirate franchise.

Rob Marshall is attached to direct from a script by Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot. Jerry Bruckheimer is producing.

The Hollywood Reporter told us that "McShane will join Johnny Depp, reprising his role of Captain Jack Sparrow, and Penelope Cruz, Sparrow's foil and equal in many ways, in a tale that revolves around the Fountain of Youth."

McShane is well known for his memorable brothel owner character in HBO's "Deadwood" so adding him to the pirates mix will certainly help the franchise, but honestly, do we really need another fourth "Pirates" film? The third one was such a letdown!

Taylor Lautner to Be Abducted!

Things are going pretty well for "Twilight" actor, Taylor Lautner. He's rumored to star in a "Vision Quest" update, he's getting paid $7.5 million for "Northern Lights," and Universal Pictures handpicked the actor for its "Stretch Armstrong" superhero flick.

Now, Lionsgate has signed a deal to distribute "Abduction," a mystery thriller to star, you guessed it, Lautner. The actor's Tailor Made shingle is also producing the project.

The script by Shawn Christensen has Lautner playing a young man who discovers his own baby picture on a missing persons website.

Tan dan dan...

Isn't this the kind of films that Shia LaBeouf should be starring in?

Marlon Wayans Wants You to Love Him as Richard Pryor

As we reported last October, director Bill Condon ("Dreamgirls") picked Marlon Wayans to star in his Richard Pryor biopic to be called "Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said?"

Adam Sandler is attached to produce the $20 million picture along with Jack Giarraputo, Chris Rock, Mark Gordon, and Jennifer Pryor.

After Wayans was announced to play the comedian, many, including myself, doubted the actor's acting prowess. This after starring in brainless comedies like "White Chicks" and "Scary Movie" films. Playing a character in "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" did not help matters.

Now, Wayans is fighting back and is saying that "he's ready" to tackle the Pryor role. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, the actor said, "I want to be in dramas, I want to produce, I want to write and I want to prove I can handle a role such as this one."

Apparently, Eddie Murphy, the first choice to play Pryor, gave Wayans his blessing! His publicist, Arnold Robinson, said, "Eddie thinks Marlon will be wonderful in the role and he's given his blessing for Marlon to do it...He's looking forward to seeing Marlon in the role."

I still doubt that Wayans can pull this off, but let's not forget that he was part of the acting ensemble in Darren Aronofsky's "Requiem for a Dream." He also starred in "The Ladykillers" for Joel and Ethan Coen aka the Coen brothers.

But why couldn't I remember his roles in the film? Could it be the actor was forgettable? If so, will he turn in a memorable performance as Pryor?

Have no fear folks, I heard that Wayans' audition for "Richard Pryor" was so great, that Condon and Sony Pictures Entertainment offered him the job. Hhhhhm, I wonder how I can get a hold of that audition tape!
