"The Eagle" Movie Review -- How Many Kisses Does Channing Tatum Get?

When we hear the name Channing Tatum, we think of romance ("Dear John"), action ("G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra"), or dance movies ("Step Up") but we never associate the actor with swords-and-sandals epics like his new film "The Eagle."

Set in 140 AD, Tatum stars as Marcus Aguila, a Roman soldier who will do anything to restore his father's reputation. 20 years earlier, the elder Aguila commanded his 5,000-strong Ninth Legion and marched north into Caledonia (today's Scotland), carrying their golden emblem, the Eagle of the Ninth. They never returned. Read More...

Not Quite Super Box-Office for Super Bowl Weekend BUT "The Roommate" Outswims James Cameron's "Sanctum!"

"The Roommate" aka "Single White Female" meets "Fatal Attraction," debuted at the top spot during a slow Super Bowl weekend. The "crazy" genre film (crazy neighbor, crazy mistress, now, crazy roommate) starring Leighton Meester (bad roommate) and Minka Kelly (good roommate) landed at No. 1 with $15.6 million.

Sorry folks, Sony declined to show "The Roommate" to critics, so I have no review, but we'll catch up very soon!

Meanwhile, James Cameron executive produced "Sanctum," but his box-office mojo could not help the underwater disaster flick. "Sanctum" from Universal Pictures opened at No. 2 with $9.2 million. But don't worry folks, Universal will soon recoup its capital since the studio only paid $12 million to distribute the film. (Check out my "Sanctum" review right here)

Previous weekend's box-office champ, "The Rite" with Anthony Hopkins, fell way below to sixth-place with $5.6 million. The exorcism thriller, so far, has made $23.7 million for Warner Bros.

Here's the estimated Top 10 list of box-office films for weekend of Feb. 4th:

1. "The Roommate," $15.6 million.
2. "Sanctum," $9.2 million.
3. "No Strings Attached," $8.4 million.
4. "The King's Speech," $8.3 million.
5. "The Green Hornet," $6.1 million.
6. "The Rite," $5.6 million.
7. "The Mechanic," $5.4 million.
8. "True Grit," $4.8 million.
9. "The Dilemma," $3.5 million.
10. "Black Swan," $3.4 million.

Just Watched -- "The Eagle" Starring Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell

I'm just writing to report to you, my lovely readers, that I just saw "The Eagle" from "The Last King of Scotland" director Kevin Macdonald. I will post my review very soon, as well as my fun one-on-one interviews with Macdonald, Bell, and Tatum. Trust me, you won't wanna miss these interviews :happy

For now, here's more info on "The Eagle" from Focus Features:

In 2nd-Century Britain, two men - master and slave - venture beyond the edge of the known world on a dangerous and obsessive quest that will push them beyond the boundaries of loyalty and betrayal, friendship and hatred, deceit and heroism. In 140 AD, the Roman Empire extends all the way to Britain - though its grasp is incomplete, as the rebellious tribes of Caledonia (today's Scotland) hold sway in the far North. Marcus Aquila arrives in Britain, determined to restore the tarnished reputation of his father, Flavius Aquila. It was 20 years earlier that Rome's 5,000-strong Ninth Legion, under the command of Flavius and carrying their golden emblem, the Eagle of the Ninth, marched north into Caledonia. They never returned; Legion and Eagle simply vanished into the mists. Angered, the Roman Emperor Hadrian ordered the building of a wall to seal off the territory. Hadrian's Wall became the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire - the edge of the known world. Driven to become a brilliant soldier and now given command of a small fort in the southwest, Marcus bravely leads his troops during a siege. Commended by Rome for his bravery, yet discharged from the army because of his severe wounds, Marcus convalesces, demoralized, in the villa of his Uncle Aquila, a retired army man. When Marcus impulsively gets a young Briton's life spared at a gladiatorial contest, Aquila buys the Briton, Esca, to be Marcus' slave. Marcus is dismissive of Esca, who harbors a seething hatred of all things Roman. Yet Esca vows to serve the man who has saved his life. Hearing a rumor that the Eagle has been seen in a tribal temple in the far north, Marcus is galvanized into action, and sets off with Esca across Hadrian's Wall. But the highlands of Caledonia are a vast and savage wilderness, and Marcus must rely on his slave to navigate the region. When they encounter ex-Roman soldier Guern, Marcus realizes that the mystery of his father's disappearance may well be linked to the secret of his own slave's identity and loyalty - a secret all the more pressing when the two come face-to-face with the warriors of the fearsome Seal Prince.
