CLINT EASTWOOD TO STAR AND DIRECT "GRAN TORINO"

The great Clint Eastwood will next direct and star in "Gran Torino" -- a project being kept under super tight wraps! The only reason we know about it is because Warner Bros. put it in their schedule.

The film is set for a December 2008 release.

Eastwood hasn't appeared on screen since "Million Dollar Baby" in 2004.

That means Mister Clint's projects will be seen back to back at the end of the year. First will be the Nov. 7th release of "Changeling," a child abduction drama starring Angelina Jolie. Eastwood is directing but not starring in that film.

Then of course, "Gran Torino," a mystery, at least for now.

JACK RYAN REVIVED!!!

Jack Ryan, the Tom Clancy-created CIA analyst character is being revived!

First, Alec Baldwin played the Jack Ryan character in "The Hunt for Red October," then, Harrison Ford stepped in for the films "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger."

Jack Ryan's most recent incarnation is Ben Affleck's portrayal in the film "The Sum of All Fears."

Now, Paramount is in talks with Sam Raimi to reinvigorate the character. Clancy is writing a book about the character, but it's not clear whether the studio is going to use it as a jumping board.

I think Paramount wants an answer to Universal's "Bourne" franchise, and they believe Jack Ryan is a perfect match! Just my opinion.

"2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY" C0-WRITER, ARTHUR C. CLARKE DIES

Arthur C. Clarke, a visionary science fiction writer who won worldwide acclaim with more than 100 books on space, science and the future, died on Wednesday in his adopted home of Sri Lanka.

He was 90.

Clarke, who had battled debilitating post-polio syndrome since the 1960s, and sometimes used a wheelchair, died at 1:30 am, Tuesday, after suffering breathing problems.

He co-wrote "2001: A Space Odyssey," the BEST sci-fi film ever!

So in one week, so far, we lost a great, visionary sci-fi writer, and a great dramatist with Anthony Minghella.

We, at mannythemovieguy.com, offer our sympathies and condolences to the Clarke family.

ANTHONY MINGHELLA DIES, 54

Oscar-winning director and writer of "The English Patient" has died suddenly. He was 54.

A spokesman told Variety, Minghella suffered a brain hemorrhage at 5 a.m. Tuesday morning at Charing Cross Hospital in London, where he had undergone a routine operation on his neck.

Minghella was an astute writer/director whose vision took us into the world of thieves ("Breaking and Entering") and American Civil War ("Cold Mountain"). He introduced us to underachieving killers ("The Talented Mr. Ripley") and forlorn lovers ("The English Patient").

My deepest sympathy and condolences go out to the Minghella family. The world has lost a creative and artistic trailblazer.
