The graphic novel "The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft" is not coming out until April 8 but Universal and Imagine Entertainment are already planning a film version of the comic book!
It's not finalize yet but Ron Howard may be directing the film.
The plot? According to Variety:
Created by Mac Carter and Jeff Blitz, book borrows elements from Lovecraft’s life, such as his family’s struggle with mental illness and his own bouts with writer’s block, and transforms the young writer’s darkest nightmares into reality when he comes across a book that puts a curse on him and lets the evils he conjures up loose on the world.
Ooooh, it's like a scary version of "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" where fictional characters converge.

As we reported last year, MGM is getting ready to produce a big screen film featuring "The Three Stooges." This Farrelly Brothers film (they wrote the script, and will also direct and produce) will not be a biopic, but more along the lines of the Stooges' characters doing their antics as popularized on TV and film.
So far, the studio has set Sean Penn to play Larry.
MGM is also negotiating with Jim Carrey to star as Curly! According to Variety, "the actor is already making plans to gain 40 pounds to approximate the physical dimensions of Jerome "Curly" Howard."
And the studio is putting Benicio Del Toro on top of their wish list to play Moe!
This is an intriguing cast! Serious actors working in a comedy. The result can either be golden or disastrous. But both Penn and Del Toro have worked in a comedy flick before.
Penn in the so-so 1989 film "We're No Angels" with Robert DeNiro, while Del Toro showed his comedic chops in "Snatch."
But the biggest surprise is Carrey to play Curly. Hopefully, his performance will far exceed his planned weight gain!
By the way, Johnny Depp was once upon a time rumored to play Moe.
Production is set to start in the fall with the film's release date sometime in 2010.
Let's go and do the Curly shuffle!

One week before it opens right here in the U.S., "Monsters vs. Aliens" arrived in Russian theaters March 20th. (Check out my review of the film right here)
And Paramount/Dreamworks move seems to have paid off! "Monsters" grossed $6.2 million from 644 theaters!
Variety is reporting that "Monsters" scored the fourth-highest opening of all time for any animated pic in Russia.
I guess Paramount decided to open ahead to ward off film pirates! The studio only shipped dubbed prints of the film. So pirates, don't even waste your time.

We may see this image again! Baz Luhrmann ("Australia," "Moulin Rouge") directed Beyonce Knowles and Hugh Jackman for a medley of showtunes at the Oscars, and now, he wants to put the singing and dancing pair on the big screen!
Luhrmann tells Vogue Magazine:
"One can only pray. My mind is racing already... I'm sure that there is a dramatic cinematic life for her. It's been a long time since we've seen that kind of performer, like Barbra Streisand and Diana Ross, on the screen."
And Jackman reveals:
"Just watching how she processes everything, she's so fast... I just found myself going, 'Oh, my God, I want to do movies with this girl. I want to do a movie musical!'"
Jackman further gushes:
"I have no doubt she'll win an Oscar one day. I can see the ambition in her to want to do that, to be in movies and really knock something out of the park. She's got it. Whatever it is, she's got it."

As we reported last year, Peter Morgan, the genius screenwriter behind "The Queen" and "Frost/Nixon" is getting ready to direct!
His film of choice?
Another movie about British Prime Minister Tony Blair!
Morgan has been working on a trilogy about Blair beginning in 2003 with the Stephen Frears' directed TV movie called "The Deal," followed by the fantastic "The Queen."
The third flick will be called "The Special Relationship" and will once again star the great Michael Sheen as Blair.
Dennis Quaid will star as Bill Clinton.
And Julianne Moore will play Hillary Clinton.
"The Special Relationship" is going to be produced by HBO but here's the caveat. It's not greenlit yet! Hhhhmmmmm...perhaps money is the issue? Apparently, HBO wants to partner with BBC Films.
But with his pedigree, headed by Morgan, how can this film go wrong?
