Another Mattel Action Figure Film! Tom Hanks to Star?

Universal Pictures is developing yet another toy-based film. This time, it's a Mattel action figure called "Major Matt Mason" and Tom Hanks is in talks to star. "Speed" writer Graham Yost is writing the script, and Hanks' Playtone is set to produce.

My big question: Why create a film version of a toy line that originated in 1966! Mattel retired the line in the 1970s, and many folks are not familiar with the product.

The plot will have Mason and his team of astronauts work on the moon and live in a space station. Hence, Hanks' involvement. The actor has worked in various space-related projects such as "Apollo 13" and the HBO mini-series "From the Earth to the Moon."

"Major Matt Mason" joins Universal's long list of toy-based film projects such as "Stretch Armstrong," "Monoploy," "Candyland," and "Ouija."

"Monsters vs. Aliens" Movie Review -- It's an Out-of-This-World 3-D Adventure!

The world of the classic 1950s B-movie genre is explored in the new animated film “Monsters vs. Aliens.” From “The Fly” to “Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman,” the film pays a loving homage to its source that monster movie lovers will have a blast watching this out-of-this-world adventure.

What Director James Cameron Really Thinks of "Terminator"

We're, of course, talking about the first "Terminator," the 1984 sci-fi classic that has been selected for preservation by the National Film Registry.

In an article in Wired magazine, Cameron talks about the film's origins, the robotic Arnold Schwarzenegger (that term is a compliment :happy), and machine wars.

Here's an excerpt:

I first remember being aware of geopolitics during the Cuban missile crisis. When I was 7 or 8, I found a pamphlet for fallout shelters on the coffee table in my family's house in Ontario, and I remember thinking, "What's this about?" I had the sudden sensation that my coddled existence was a facade. Something dark and terrifying lurked behind it.

I've been fascinated ever since by our human propensity for dancing on the edge of the apocalypse. So when I wrote the first Terminator outline around 1982, I was just working out my childhood stuff. It was also born out of the science fiction movies and literature I grew up with. For the most part, they were warnings—about technology, about science, about the military and the government. You couldn't escape those themes or the fear of nuclear holocaust.

Anne Hathaway to Star as Judy Garland!

Why didn't I think of this before? I can totally see Anne Hathaway as Judy Garland!

As we reported last month, the Weinstein Co. is set to turn the life of tragic icon Judy Garland into a major Hollywood motion picture!

But wait there's more! Hathaway will also star on stage as Garland! The studio is also producing a stage version of the book by Gerald Clarke called "Get Happy."

Harvey Weinstein was heard saying:

"Hathaway will be a true class act in this challenging role" and Clarke's book is a great resource because it "is particularly outstanding because of its exlusive details from her own writings."
