We all predicted that "The Hunger Games" would take the box-office crown this past weekend but I didn't think we knew just how much! Well, suffice it to say that Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games" was a bonafide box-office bonanza scoring the third-best debut of all time, and the best for any film opening outside of summer! ("The Hunger Games" movie review)
"The Hunger Games," starring Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Collins from the bestselling young-adult novel by Suzanne Collins," sold $155 million worth of box-office tickets, claiming the top spot and broke box-office records including having the biggest opening for a non-sequel.
The film now sits close to the top of the all-time box-office heap with "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" ($169.2 million) at No. 1 and "The Dark Knight" ($158.4 million) at No. 2. "The Hunger Games" rightfully claimed the No. 3 all-time spot scoring a huge opening bigger than any of the "Twilight" films including the franchise's biggest opener, "New Moon" ($142.8 million).
