French Actress to Star As Mermaid in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides"

Ahoy Mateys! Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Rob Marshall have chosen Astrid Bergès-Frisbey to play the key role of Syrena, a beautiful and alluring young mermaid, in Walt Disney Pictures’/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ epic adventure “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” the fourth installment of the super-popular franchise!

Bergès-Frisbey joins Johnny Depp, returning in his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow, Penelope Cruz as the romantic lead, and Ian McShane as the big bad Blackbeard.

So who is the actress? Here's what Disney said in their press release:

Born in Barcelona of French-American and Catalan parentage, and now based in Paris, Bergès-Frisbey, one of France’s brightest young stars, appears in such French films as “La Fille du Puisatier,” “Bruc,” “Extase,” “La Premiere Etoile” and “Un Barrage Contre le Pacifique.” She has also appeared in the telefilms “La Reine Morte,” “Elles et Moi,” “Divine Emilie” and “Sur le Fil.” Berges-Frisbey appeared on stage at the Theatre Marigny in a production of Peter Shaffer’s “Equus.”

"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" stars production in June and will film entirely on location in Hawaii, Great Britain and Los Angeles.

The film is slated to open on May 20, 2011, but I have one important question -- Bergès-Frisbey is going to play a mermaid in the film, I imagine her topless with hair covering her breasts, so then I assume she doesn't have fake boobs as Disney famously banned breast implants on the set! :happy

They Found "Captain America's" Girlfriend!

It's one of the most coveted roles this year -- the female lead in Marvel's "Captain America!" Last week, we told you that British actress, Alice Eve ("She's Out of My League"), was the front runner. But her fellow Brit, Hayley Atwell ("Brideshead Revisited," "The Duchess"), was also making waves. Both actresses screen-tested for the second time in London, and the winner is Atwell!

She will be Captain America's girlfriend, Peggy Carter. In comic book mythology, Carter dates Captain America but she is also an agent helping the French Resistance. In the character's later reincarnations, Peggy becomes the aunt of Sharon Carter, Captain America's love in modern times. Wow, that Captain America is one hot playboy :happy

Atwell also beat out Emily Blunt and Keira Knightley for the role, so congratulations!

Chris Evans is playing our spandex-clad hero and his alter-ego Steve Rogers while Sebastian Stan is set to star as Captain America's sidekick Bucky Barnes. Right now, Hugo Weaving is still negotiating to play the big bad Red Skull. What are you waiting for Mr. Weaving?

Director Joe Johnston is shooting the film in England this summer.

Zac Efron -- Money Launderer

Zac Efron is attached to star in and produce a remake of "Snabba cash" according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film is a hot Swedish property and it's supposed to be the subject of a heavy Hollywood bidding war. Universal, Summit, Paramount, Fox, the Weinstein Co., Mandate and Warners all promised easy money to the Swedish filmmakers (snabba cash means easy money).

In the end, Warner Bros. won!

Based on a novel by Jens Lapidus, "Snabba" tells the three interconnected storylines involving drugs and organized crime. The main character is a young man, played by Joel Kinnaman in the original Swedish film, who becomes a runner for a coke dealer in hopes to make it big. Efron will play that part.

Let's hope that the American version will be as fantastic as the original but with the original producer, Fredrik Wikstrom, involved, it's a good sign.

For now, let's take a look at the trailer of the original Swedish film:

Rachel Weisz to Star as Jackie Kennedy

Rachel Weisz is attached to play the late first lady in "Jackie" about the immediate days following President Kennedy's assassination EW.com exclusively learned.

Weisz will reteam with her fiancee, the fantastic Darren Aronofsky ("The Wrestler"), who is set to direct and produce. The two previously worked together on the off-key but earnest 2006's "The Fountain."

Apparently, the "Jackie" script by Noah Oppenheim has been a hot commodity for sometime now. EW.com is saying that the film "catalogs the four days between JFK’s assassination and his burial, showing the beloved Jackie at both her most vulnerable and her most graceful."

I can't wait to see this film! I'm sure, Academy Award-winner Weisz will be able to pull off this performance, and Aronofsky will flash his auteur vision on the big screen.

Martin Scorsese Embraces 3D for New Children's Book Adaptation

As we told you back in January, the great Martin Scorsese is making his first foray into children's literature! The director was under negotiations with GK Films to direct the best-selling book "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" by Brian Selznick.

Winner of the 2008 Randolph Caldecott Medal, the story is set in 1930s Paris and revolves around a 12 year old orphan named Hugo who lives in a train station and must fix a broken robot to fulfill his late father's wish.

John Logan adapted the screenplay. The writer previously worked with Scorsese for "The Aviator." The film is being put on the fast track with a June 1 start date in London and a release date set for December 9, 2011.

Not only is this film Scorsese's first children's book adaptation, it will also be his first 3D film! But unlike, say "Clash of the Titans," this film will be shot in 3D and NOT just converted into the three-dimensional technology.

The film's young cast includes Asa Butterfield from "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" and the fantastic Chloe Moretz aka Hit Girl from the upcoming "Kick Ass." Both actors will be joining Ben Kingsley and Sacha Baron Cohen.

I worship at the Scorsese altar so this is exciting news for me. And plus points for the iconic director for trying something new...again!
