It's Official: Brad Bird to Direct His First Live-Action Film With "MIssion: Impossible IV"

As we told you last March, Brad Bird ("The Iron Giant," "The Incredibles," "Ratatouille") was one of the few directors being considered for "Mission: Impossible IV."

Well, it's now official, Bird will be directing Tom Cruise for the fourth installment which is due out in theaters 2011. Cruise told E! Online, “The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille – Brad is enormously talented and JJ and I are having a blast, cranking away...we’re having a lot of fun. I like working with people I just love hanging out with. You get to hang out and laugh and talk stories and movies and technology: what are we going to do?”

Bird beat out other "M:I 4" directing contenders such as "Zombieland's" Ruben Fleischer, and Edgar Wright ("Hot Fuzz").

Here's what we said in March:

Brad Bird may soon jump into live action! The director of "The Iron Giant," "The Incredibles," and "Ratatouille," is one of the few directors being considered for "Mission: Impossible IV" according to The Hollywood Reporter.

This is exciting! I've always regarded Bird as a great storyteller who knows how to mix action and emotion perfectly!

Tom Cruise and producer J.J. Abrams are busy looking for the perfect director for the fourth installment. Cruise will reprise his role as secret agent Ethan Hunt for the Paramount film set to open May 27, 2011. Production is set to begin this summer.

The other contenders to direct are "Zombieland's" Ruben Fleischer, and Edgar Wright ("Hot Fuzz").

If Bird is picked, "M:I-4" will be his first live-action film. He has been developing "1906" (about the 1906 San Francisco earthquake) as his possible live-action debut but according to THR, it is rumored to be stalled because of budgetary reasons. (My Disney source is still adamant in telling me that Bird is the creative force behind "Maleficent" -- the retelling of Sleeping Beauty from the evil queen's point of view that has Angelina Jolie being mentioned as a possible star)

The plot for "M:I-4" is being kept in tight wraps but Abrams worked on the story with screenwriters Andre Nemec and Josh Appelbaum.

"Iron Man 2" Movie Review -- How Many Kisses Does Robert Downey Jr. Get?

“Iron Man” became an overnight film sensation when it opened on May 2nd, 2008. Two years later, the sequel aims to fly higher than the original, but it doesn’t have the same emotional weight as the first one.

Robert Downey Jr., on the other hand, is bigger and better than ever as billionaire turned super hero, Tony Stark. We all know Downey Jr. is the man, and he’s in full visceral force in the sequel. Only this time, not only is he battling personal demons, Stark discovers the palladium in the arc reactor of his Iron Man suit is poisoning him. Read More...

Twihards Save the Date! "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" Will Be Released On...

NOVEMBER 18, 2011

Summit Entertainment has finally made up its mind and released the release date. "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" will be directed by Bill Condon. (Check out his plea to Twihards right here)

Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner are set to return and here's the caveat, Melissa Rosenberg is set to adapt the final chapter of the Stephenie Meyer book, and honestly, and I've been talking about this forever, Summit must find another screenwriter, pronto! I was not impressed with the way she adapted the first two books, "Twilight" and "New Moon."

Now, "Twilight: Breaking Dawn" must fight with "Happy Feet 2" and DreamWorks' "Real Steel" for box-office domination. All three films are sharing the same release date.

And I have one more question, I thought Summit will be releasing the final chapter in two parts ala "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?"

Hugo Weaving to Play "Captain America" Villain, Red Skull!

Hugo Weaving is set to play the "Captain America" Big Bad, Johann Schmidt aka the Red Skull. Best known as the baddie Agent Smith in the "Matrix" films (I particularly like Weaving in "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" he-he-he), Weaving's addition to "Captain America" is good news. He has a knack for stealing scenes everytime!

Joe Johnston ("The Wolfman") is set to direct and Chris Evans will wield the shield as Steve Rogers aka Captain America. Sebastian Stan is going to play Captain America's sidekick Bucky Barnes while Hayley Atwell will star as Peggy Carter, our hero's girlfriend.

Production will begin this summer in London with the release date set for July 22, 2011.
