"Fast and Furious 6" Races to the Top of Box-Office Heap This Memorial Day Weekend!

As I was getting ready to write off the "Fast and Furious" franchise as one too many "Fast and Furious" movies, along comes "Fast and Furious 6," perhaps the best film of the franchise, and the biggest Universal moneymaker debut...ever.

Starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Tyrese, Dwayne Johnson, and Michele Rodriguez, "Fast and Furious 6" sped to the top of the box-office heap with $120 million domestically and $158 million internationally -- the biggest opening for a Universal Pictures release.

It just won't stop!!! (Thoughts on "Fast and Furious 6," "The Hangover Part 3," and "Epic" here)

And the film stopped "The Hangover Part III" to debut on top. The threequel opened at No. 2 with a still-respectable $51.2 million. Billed as the last "Hangover" ever with the original cast (Bradley Cooper, Justin Bartha, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, and Ken Jeong), the film is somewhat saved by its irreverent end-of-credits treasure that truly captured the spirit of the franchise.

The two new releases together with the animated flick "Epic" (No. 4 at $42.6 million), "Star Trek Into Darkness" (No. 3 with $47 million), and "Iron Man 3" (No. 5 with $24.4 million), helped make this Memorial Day weekend the biggest, record-breaking four-day weekend with $316 million total!

Hurray for Hollywood!

Here's the Top 10 Box-Office Films for Memorial Day weekend of 2013:

1. “Fast & Furious 6,” $120 million ($158 million international)

2. “The Hangover Part III,” $51.2 million ($19.2 million international)

4. “Epic,” $42.6 million ($23.1 million international)

5. “Iron Man 3,” $24.4 million ($17.4 million international)

6. “The Great Gatsby,” $17 million ($24.4 million international)

7. “Mud,” $2.5 million ($400,000 international)

8. “The Croods,” $1.6 million ($5.8 million international)

What I Think of "The Hangover Part III" and Other Memorial Day Weekend Releases Such as "Fast and Furious 6" and "Epic"

Okay, first, let's talk about "Fast and Furious 6." As I was getting ready to hate this franchise (it will not die!), the latest installment is well, still fast and furious and funny with a twist at the end that sets up the next installment. Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, and Michele Rodriguez return to their roles, and seriously, I love how this franchise does not take itself too seriously. But if I see "Fast and Furious 30" in the future, I'll run myself over! (:3k)

And then we have "Epic." This 3D CG animated adventure is not quite epic, a bit more generic, but the voice cast including Colin Farrell, Amanda Seyfried, and Beyonce is fun, and the animation is superb. The storytelling? It's a bit uninspired but kids will fall in love with the movie while grown-ups may probably get bored. (:25k)

And that leaves us with "The Hangover Part 3." Is the final chapter worth your time and money? Take a look:

Tom Cruise Disowns "The Man From U.N.C.L.E."

After briefly being attached to the big screen version of "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," Tom Cruise has officially left the building according to Deadline. The reason? He would be busy doing "Mission: Impossible 5."

The Warner Bros. project, an adaptation of the TV show that ran from 1964 through 1968, has suffered many setbacks. First, the original tandem recruited to make the film in 2010, director Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney left the project with the actor blaming his back injury as the reason for the departure. So Soderbergh went on a mission to find Clooney's replacement with names such as Johnny Depp, Channing Tatum, Bradley Cooper, Ryan Gosling, and Michael Fassbender. Then, in 2011 Soderbergh left the project as well. One month later, Guy Ritchie stepped in, and so far, he's still at the helm. We think...

Armie Hammer, who also stars in "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," is so far staying put. We think...

Morgan Freeman Fell Asleep During An Interview? Actor Blames it On...What?

Morgan Freeman, during a press tour for the fantastic "Now You See Me" with Michael Caine, apparently fell asleep while being interviewed by a Fox affiliate station in Seattle.

First, I hope this doesn't happen to me while I interview a star. I would take it like I'm so boring and horrible that I turned the celebrity lethargic. So far, in my interviews with Freeman, he hadn't fallen asleep. Check this out where the actor called me the "happiest man on Earth" for our "Born to Be Wild" interview. And this one for the fun "Dolphin Tale."

But the actor was just probably tired. So do you know how he responded to the sleeping controversy? He blamed it on Google Eyelids! HA!

Posting on his Facebook page, Freeman joked:

Regarding my recent interview, I wasn't actually sleeping. I'm a beta tester for Google Eyelids and I was merely taking the opportunity to update my Facebook page.

Catch me on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart at 11pm E/P.

And he even posted a fun picture with him giving the thumb up. See his picture below:

By the way, "Now You See Me" opens next Friday, May 31st. Here are my interviews for the movie done in New Orleans, Louisiana. Oh...don't worry, I didn't make them fall asleep (click on the links below):
