First, "The Women" was a 1936 Broadway play directed by Robert B. Sinclair, then, it was successfully adapted for the big screen by director George Cukor in 1939 starring Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Paulette Goddard, Joan Fontaine, Lucile Watson, Mary Boland, Marjorie Main, Virginia Grey, Phyllis Povah, Florence Nash, Ruth Hussey, Virginia Weidler, Butterfly McQueen, and Hedda Hopper.
Then in 1956, the story was made into a musical film titled "The Opposite Sex," starring June Allyson and Joan Collins.
Now, after years of long-gestation, we will finally see a new update starring the likes of Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Carrie Fisher, Candice Bergen, Jada Pinkett Smith, Debra Messing, Cloris Leachman, and Bette Midler among others.
Like the original play, it boasts an all-women lead! It's an estrogen fest! Hey, it worked really well for "Sex and the City." And they have Mick Jagger to co-produce the movie
Here's a summary of the plot:
The story centers on a group of gossipy, high-society women who spend their days at the beauty salon and haunting fashion shows. The sweet, happily-wedded Mary Haines finds her marriage in trouble when shop girl Crystal Allen gets her hooks into Mary's man. Naturally, this situation becomes the hot talk amongst Mary's catty friends, especially the scandalmonger Sylvia Fowler, who has little room to talk - she finds herself on a train to Reno and headed for divorce right after Mary.

Proving that Carrie and her pals still have their sex appeal, "Sex and the City" strutted on top of the box-office catfight with a $55.7 million opening!
Women power! Many industry insiders believe it's the female viewers who drove the film to its No. 1 spot.
What about our friend Indy? Don't worry, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" still cracks the whip with a respectable $46 million take, raising its domestic total to $216.9 million, making it No. 2.
The other new film brave enough to duke it out with "Sex and the City," "The Strangers," debuted at No. 3 with $20.7 million.
