More Changes Ahead for the Oscars! This Time, Best Original Song!

Besides the 10 Best Picture nominees rule for 2010 Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled new changes for the Music - Original Song category.

I still think it's a crime that Bruce Springsteen's haunting theme song for "The Wrestler" wasn't even nominated.

So, the Academy is changing the way they vote for the category. According to their site:

In the original song category, the governors approved the Music Branch Executive Committee recommendation that if no song achieves a minimum average score of 8.25 in the nominations voting, there be no nominees and thus no Oscar presented for the category.

If only one song achieves the required minimum, it and the song with the next highest score will be deemed the nominees. If two or more songs achieve the minimum score, they will be the nominees though no more than five nominees can be selected.

Previously, the rules dictated that there be no more than five but no fewer than three nominees in the category.

Other changes include the Testimonial Awards namely the Irving G. Thalberg Award, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and the Honorary Award will now be presented at an event in November of this year.

Hhhhmmm, to give more time talking about the 10 Best Picture nominees perhaps?

Important Dates:

Academy Award nominations -- February 2, 2010

Academy Award telecast -- March 7, 2010

Michael Jackson Dies at 50

We are following breaking news right now out of Los Angeles. Michael Jackson has died at the age of 50.

This afternoon - the pop star was taken by ambulance to UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles suffering from cardiac arrest. Jackson was not breathing when he was taken from a home he is renting in the Holmby Hills area to the hospital.

I'm just sad. Another one of my childhood pop icons passed away :sad

You'll be missed Michael!

Saw a screening of "Public Enemies" last night at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. So what do I think of the film?

It's good not great! And I want it to be great! It's Depp! It's Bale! It's Michael Mann! But Marion Cotillard stole the show!

I will post my full review very soon, but if you can't wait, you can twitter me at http://twitter.com/mannymovies or email me at manny@mannythemovieguy.com.

An Angel Gets Her Wings! Farrah Fawcett Dies at 62

After a long battle with cancer, Farrah Fawcett died at the age of 62. Another one of my pop culture icons has passed away :sad

Although the actress never excelled in the movie industry, she was certainly a major TV star! She was my favorite angel in "Charlie's Angels" next to Kate Jackson's Sabrina! And she had shown some acting depth in various TV movies such as "The Burning Bed."

And yes, I had her famous poster on my wall!

For more on Miss Farrah's life, click here.

Here's a special look back at the life and times of Farrah Fawcett. Good bye Miss Farrah, and our heartfelt condolences to Ryan O'Neal and the rest of Fawcett's family :sad
