"Bruno" Sashays On Top of Box Office

"Bruno" emerged as the top box-office winner this past weekend. Sacha Baron Cohen's gay fashionista from Austria beat prehistoric animals and giant robots and landed the No. 1 spot with $30.4 million.

But many Hollywood insiders are doubting "Bruno's" staying power since the film, which opened huge Friday (taking in $14.4 million) had a big drop the rest of the weekend. Saturday, "Bruno" fell with just $8.8 million and an estimated $7.2 million Sunday.

Typically, word of mouth help generate a film's success on Saturday and Sunday, but in "Bruno's" case, curiosity probably drove moviegoers to watch it Friday, and then cautiously told their friends to avoid it on Saturday and Sunday.

Cohen's previous film, "Borat," started with $9.2 million Friday, then climbed to $10.1 million Saturday, suggesting that moviegoers were telling their pals to watch the film.

"Borat" eventually became a $100 million box-office smash. Many are wondering if "Bruno" can equal that success.

Meanwhile, "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" took the No. 2 spot with $28.5 million, raising its domestic total to $120.6 million.

At No. 3 is the box-office sensation "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" with $24.2 million. So far, the sequel has raised its domestic total to $339.2 million, surpassing the original's $319 million box-office total.

And the weekend's other new release, 20th Century Fox's romantic comedy "I Love You, Beth Cooper" opened poorly with $5 million to debut at No. 7. Moviegoers did not show the love to Beth Cooper.

Here's the Top 10 Box Office list for the weekend of July 10th:

1. "Bruno," $30.4 million.

2. "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs," $28.5 million.

3. "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," $24.2 million.

4. "Public Enemies," $14.1 million.

5. "The Proposal," $10.5 million.

6. "The Hangover," $9.9 million.

7. "I Love You, Beth Cooper," $5 million.

8. "Up," $4.7 million.

9. "My Sister's Keeper," $4.2 million.

10. "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3," $1.6 million.

"Bandslam" Rocks! I Really Enjoyed this Film! And "Twilight" Fans, it's Confirmed! "New Moon" Trailer to be Shown!

I had no idea what to expect with "Bandslam," but I had faith that director Todd Graff would do wonders with the material. In 2003, Graff wrote and directed "Camp" which was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at that year's Sundance.

This time, the director is back with singing kids and a rockin' soundtrack to give us one of the most fulfilling movies this summer.

Vanessa Hudgens (Sa5m -- the 5 is silent)and Alyson Michalka (Charolotte) are fantastic but newcomer Gaelan Connell (Will Burton) is the anchor of the film. His role as a high school loser with great love for rock and roll is the focal point of the film. But perennial scene-stealer Lisa Kudrow as Gaelan's mom well, steals the show.

There is no false note in the film, the script is funny and touching, and the end result is a sweet movie about kids wanting to rock out at Bandslam, the annual band contest that turns high school rock bands into professional rock stars!

Oh yeah, there's a cameo by a respectable rock god!

So this is no "High School Musical." Trust me!

"Bandslam" opens nationwide on August 14th! And I will post my full review plus my interviews with Vanessa Hudgens, Alyson Michalka, Gaelan Connell, and Lisa Kudrow very soon!

My Summit contact confirmed to me that "Twilight Saga: New Moon" trailer will be shown before "Bandslam" on its theatrical release! And he said that it's a great trailer! But he won't tell me anything else...darn it, I wish they showed the trailer during the screening last night, but I'll keep on asking for info :wink

Ryan Reynolds Beats Bradley Cooper, Justin Timberlake to become "Green Lantern!"

There was big talk yesterday that Warner Bros was about to decide who will wear the super-fantastic ring in "Green Lantern." Director Martin Campbell ("Casino Royale"), producers Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti have spent 5 months searching for the actor to play Hal Jordan, the Air Force pilot chosen by a dying alien to be his successor in an intergalactic police force known as the Green Lanterns.

The top three finalists were Bradley Cooper ("The Hangover"), Ryan Reynolds ("The Proposal," "X-Men Origins: Wolverine"), and Justin Timberlake ("Alpha Dog," "Black Snake Moan").

The studio must act quick because their holding deal with the actors would have expired this coming Monday. So act quickly they did, and chose...RYAN REYNOLDS!

That's right, Deadpool will also be the Green Lantern!

Reynolds beat other contenders such as Michael Fassbender, Henry Cavill, and Jared Leto. The actor will hold the title of the only thespian to have played both DC and Marvel Comics superhero.

But here's hoping that the "Green Lantern" will not suffer the same fate as "The Flash" which Reynolds was also attached to play. And to this day, no word yet on when the superhero speedster will race to the theaters.

Jodie Foster to Direct Mel Gibson in Hand-Puppet Movie!

Jodie Foster returns to the director chair in "The Beaver." She also will reteam with her "Maverick" co-star Mel Gibson.

The film, written by Kyle Killen, is about a depressed man (Gibson) who finds comfort wearing a beaver hand-puppet. Hhhhmmmmm, quirky, Freudian, intriguing!

Foster will also play Gibson's wife in the film.

The script for the film is supposed to be brilliant, and many creative talents were interested to make this film including Steve Carell and Jay Roach, but the combo of Foster and Gibson beat them to the punch!

The Next Movie of "The Hangover" Director...Oh, There's Also the Inevitable Sequel!

With the success of "The Hangover," director Todd Phillips is now one busy man! He will next direct "Due Date," another road trip comedy, and then a year later, "The Hangover 2" comes out!

So far, "The Hangover" has surpassed "Wedding Crashers" and is on its way to beat the biggest R-rated comedy, "Beverly Hills Cop."

Zach Galifianakis is set to play one of the two leads in "Due Date" written by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland. According to Variety, "Due Date" is a comedy about fatherhood in which an expectant dad and his unlikely travel companion (Galifianakis) race cross-country in hopes of making it home for the birth of his first child. Phillips called it a “buddy comedy without the buddies.”

The film is set to begin production October 6 and will be released the first weekend of June 2010. Meanwhile, "The Hangover 2" will begin production in October 2010 and will be released Memorial Day weekend of 2011.

Hhhhm, you wanna bet that the sequel will feature the wedding between Stu (Ed Helms) and Jade (Heather Graham)?
