Why is Julianne Moore Blonde?

It's for a movie Julianne Moore is doing for director David Cronenberg called "Map to the Stars." Moore has dyed her red hair blonde for the film co-starring Robert Pattinson, Mia Wasikowska, John Cusack, and Carrie Fisher.

The film is being shot on location in Toronto and it's about Hollywood and its complex relation and its contribution to pop culture and Western civilization.

"Map to the Stars" is scheduled to open in the U.S. next year.

Spike Lee's "Oldboy" Remake Gets Official Poster!

Film District has released the first official one-sheet poster for "Oldboy," Spike Lee's American remake of the popular Korean thriller. Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, and Sharlto Copley star with the script written by Mark Protosevich ("I Am Legend," "The Cell," "Thor").

Lee is promising that this version will be darker than Chan-wook Park's 2003 original called "Oldeuboi." The Korean art-house hit was based on a Japanese manga series and won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival. The film eventually became a part of Park's Vengeance trilogy which included 2002's "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" and 2005's "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance."

The remake will be released by Film District on Oct. 25. And if you look at the poster, the "Oldboy" logo itself is Brolin's handwriting inspired by the letters his character writes to his daughter while imprisoned in the film.

Here's the complete plot line from Film District:

OLDBOY is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment. Co-starring Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley, OLDBOY was directed by Spike Lee, from a script by Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, The Cell, Thor). The film was produced by Roy Lee, Doug Davison and Nathan Kahane.

By the way, Samuel L. Jackson also appears in the film for a small but critical part. According to the LA times, the actor will play a man who is being tortured by Brolin in a "key revenge scene."

"Despicable Me 2" Triumphs, "The Lone Ranger" Flops!

The minions beat Johnny Depp at the box-office with "Despicable Me 2" easily winning the 4th of July weekend race against the Disney western "The Lone Ranger."

The Universal animated sequel sold $82.5 million worth of tickets over the weekend and $142.1 million with the five-day holiday total beginning Wednesday, July 4th.

Meanwhile, the ho-hum "The Lone Ranger" starring Armie Hammer as the masked avenger and Depp as the native American warrior and the movie's narrator, Tonto, earned a disappointing $29.4 million over the weekend, and an equally ho-hum $48.9 million since Wednesday.

And the big bloated mess of a movie came with a reported $225 million (or is it $250 million?) budget! Yikes!

"The Lone Ranger" marks the third big-budget bomb of the summer next to "After Earth" starring Will Smith and his baby Jaden, and "White House Down" with Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx. This just goes to show you that big-name stars are not enough to carry a film. You also need a commanding plot.

So will "The Lone Ranger" recoup its budget? Silver will need to gallop for a long, long time. According to THR, the film suffered in appealing mostly to older moviegoers with "58 percent of the audience over the age of 35, including 24 percent over the age of 50 percent."

The Gore Verbinski big screen adaptation of the popular TV western classic must also appeal to younger audience to survive but alas, only 16 percent of the audience were under the age of 18.

It now depends on the popularity of Depp overseas which incidentally, also belonged to the entertaining minions of "Despicable Me 2." THR is reporting that the animated flick "scored the biggest opening ever for an animated film in Latin America, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, South Africa and Vietnam."

The other animated box-office champ, the funny "Monsters University," fell to No. 4 with $19.6 million. "The Heat" starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy continued to scorch at No. 3 with $25 million. Brad Pitt's zombie flick, "World War Z," rounded out the top 5 with $18.2 million.

The other new entry at the box-office, stand-up Kevin Hart's concert documentary "Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain" surprised everyone and pleased distributor Summit Entertainment with its strong showing of $17.5 million over five days and $10.1 million over the weekend.

Here's the estimated Top 10 Box-Office List for the weekend of July 5th:

1. "Despicable Me 2," $82.5 million.

2. "The Lone Ranger," $29.4 million ($24.3 million international).

3. "The Heat," $25 million.

4. "Monsters University," $19.6 million.

5. "World War Z," $18.2 million.

6. "White House Down," $13.5 million.

7. "Man of Steel," $11.4 million.

8. "Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain," $10.1 million.

9. "This Is the End," $5.8 million.

10. "Now You See Me," $2.8 million.

Will "Despicable Me 2" Triumph Over "The Lone Ranger?" See My Pick of the Week!

It's one of the biggest movie weekends of the year, the 4th of July holiday! And we have two big films to choose from -- “Despicable Me 2” the sequel to the 2010 box-office hit, and “The Lone Ranger,” the big screen adaptation of the beloved TV series.

In “Despicable Me 2,” Steve Carrell returns to voice Gru, the once-powerful super villain who is now a changed man. But when a new villain, El Macho, arrives on the scene, the Anti-Villain League must call Gru for help. Joining the cast is Kristen Wiig as an Anti-Villain League agent named Lucy Wilde.

In “The Lone Ranger,” Johnny Depp wears a dead bird for a hair piece as Tonto, a Native American warrior and the film’s narrator. He’s telling the story of John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law who became the masked avenger known as the Lone Ranger. From the creators of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise (producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Gore Verbinski), “The Lone Ranger” is PG-13 for sequences of intense action and violence.

So which one is my pick of the week? Here are my movie reviews of "Despicable Me 2" and "The Lone Ranger":
