UPDATE! "Takers" takes Box-Office Crown from "The Last Exorcism"

UPDATE: According to final tally, "Takers" was the No. 1 movie in America and NOT "The Last Exorcism." Yesterday, the films were only separated by $300,000, today, it was a mere $146,000 with "Takers" ahead with $20.5 million compared to $20.4 million for "The Last Exorcism."

Here's the final Top 10 list of box-office films:

1. 'Takers,' $20.5 million (2,206 screens), new release
2. 'The Last Exorcism,' $20.4 million (2,874), new release
3. 'The Expendables,' $9.5 million (3,398), $82.0 million total
4. 'Eat Pray Love,' $6.8 million (3,108), $60.5 million
5. 'The Other Guys,' $6.3 million (3,181 screens), $99.0 million
6. 'Vampires Suck,' $5.2 million (3,233), $27.8 million
7. 'Inception,' $4.9 million (2,070), $270.5 million
8. 'Nanny McPhee Returns,' $4.7 million (2,798), $17.0 million
9. 'The Switch,' $4.6 million (2,017), $16.4 million
10. 'Piranha 3D,' $4.3 million (2,491), $18.3 million

"The Last Exorcism" and "Takers" were neck and neck for the No. 1 box office spot according to studio estimates. The horror film "The Last Exorcism" had a very slim lead with a $21.3 million box-office take compared to $21 million opening for "Takers." The distance between the first and the second was a mere $300,000.

Meanwhile, after enjoying the top spot for two weekends, "The Expendables" from actor-writer-director Sylvester Stallone fell to No. 3 with $9.5 million. So far, the Lionsgate testosterone fest has raised its total to $82 million.

Somewhere in the box-office planet, the 3-D special edition of "Avatar" (with additional 9 minutes of footage) sold $4 million worth of tickets lifting its domestic total to $753.8 million.

"The Last Exorcism" only cost $2 million to produce and Lionsgate only shelled out $1 million to distribute the horror flick about an exorcist caught on tape.

Here's the estimated Top 10 list of box-office films for weekend of Aug. 27th (final tally will be released Monday and since the lead between "The Last Exorcism" and "Takers" were so small, expect the Top 10 to change):

1. "The Last Exorcism," $21.3 million.

2. "Takers," $21 million.

3. "The Expendables," $9.5 million.

4. "Eat Pray Love," $7 million.

5. "The Other Guys," $6.6 million.

6. "Vampires Suck," $5.3 million.

7. "Inception," $5.1 million.

8. "Nanny McPhee Returns," $4.74 million

9. "The Switch," $4.7 million.

10. "Piranha 3D," $4.3 million.

John Cusack to Star as Edgar Allen Poe in "The Raven"

John Cusack is set to play Edgar Allen Poe in "The Raven" from director James McTeigue. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it's a fictional thriller set in 1849 Baltimore during "the last five days of Poe's life in which he is forced to partner with a detective in search of a serial killer who has kidnapped Poe's fiancé and has gone on a spree of murders that mimics the author's work."

At one point, both Joaquin Phoenix and Ewan McGregor were in talks to play Poe, while Jeremy Renner had to bow out of production because of "Mission: Impossible 4." "The Hurt Locker" star was supposed to play the detective.

Paging Katie Holmes it's Adam Sandler, "True Blood" Star to "Scream," Impossible Mission for "Hurt Locker" Actor, We Really Love You "Phillip Morris," and Angelina Jolie is "Unforgiven!"

Today, I was bombarded with all the news I could handle, so I'm sharing them with you!

Katie Holmes may soon star with Adam Sandler and Al Pacino in the new Columbia Pictures comedy, "Jack and Jill" from director Dennis Dugan. Mrs. Tom Cruise is in talks to play Sandler's wife while Pacino is set to play, get this, himself! Sandler will play BOTH Jack and Jill, twins with issues. It's sorta like a family comedy which is perfect because teh film is set on Thanksgiving. THR

"True Blood" star Anna Paquin and Kristen Bell are set to make cameos in "Scream 4." Wes Craven's film has a top secret script but we're hearing that both Paquin and Bell will cameo in the same vein as Drew Barrymore's in the original "Scream." I'm excited for this film as I'm a fan of the "Scream" franchise, and with a reported 140-page script, this may well be the longest film of the series. THR

"The Hurt Locker's" Jeremy Renner is joining Tom Cruise in "Mission: Impossible 4." Brad Bird is directing the film from a script by Josh Applebaum and André Nemec. Shooting is expected to begin this fall with a Dec. 16, 2011 opening date. THR

So finally, after months (actually more than a year!) of waiting, "I Love You Phillip Morris" is coming to theaters near you! The film billed as the gay movie with Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor will open in theaters near you on Dec. 3 thanks to Roadside Attractions and Liddell Entertainment. The "Bad Santa" team of Glenn Ficarra and John Requa wrote and directed the film which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009. I wonder if the American version will slightly differ from the global version. I saw the film, it was okay, not that memorable, but I did enjoy the performances! So mark your calendars, Dec. 3rd, and see Carrey and McGregor go gay! Yay! Here's the trailer:

Angelina Jolie is being courted by producer Graham King to star in "Unforgiven." No, this one's not a remake of the Clint Eastwood film, it's based on a British miniseries. Christopher McQuarrie is adapting for the big screen. Jolie will star as a jailed woman who's attempting to rejoin society after serving a 15-year prison term. Sounds like a Jolie project doesn't it? DEADLINE

That's it for now, all the fantastic movie news I could muster!
