Reese Witherspoon Has Fever to Play Peggy Lee

Reese Witherspoon already won an Oscar for playing a real-life character, now, the actress wants to produce and star in the new untitled biopic of influential singer Peggy Lee.

Witherspoon, who took home the 2006 Best Actress Oscar for playing June Carter in "Walk the Line," is producing with Marc Platt for Fox 2000 according to Variety. Nora Ephron is writing and attached to direct.

Witherspoon met with Lee's granddaughter, Holly Foster-Wells, and secured the rights to the singer's story. She then approached Platt who turned her into a household name with the "Legally Blonde" franchise.

Fox 2000 was also the studio behind "Walk the Line." Much like that Johnny Cash biopic, this upcoming film will chronicle Lee's rise to fame as a singer, songwriter, composer, and actress whose career spanned nearly seven decades. Among Lee's most popular song is "Fever" and she's considered as one of the most influential jazz vocalists of all time.

The big question? Does Witherspoon have the jazz voice to give justice to Lee's songs? Or will she lip-sync?

It's Not Even Out Yet But "Green Lantern" Gets Sequel, Hires "Harry Potter" Writer

Warner Bros. has such strong confidence on its upcoming "Green Lantern" that the studio is putting a sequel on fast track and has hired "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" writer Michael Goldenberg to pen a script.

Starring Ryan Reynolds, WB has clearly seen the future and it's green. Hence, "Green Lantern 2" has been greenlit. But first, we have to wait on how the first "Green" will do at the box-office when it opens on June 17, 2011.

Is Hollywood Killing Superhero Genre? Director Matthew Vaughn Says Yes!

"Kick-Ass" director Matthew Vaughn, currently shooting "X-Men: First Class" in London, said Hollywood is the kryptonite to the superhero genre's Superman. Soon, the superhero movie, as we know it, will die according to Vaughn talking to the Los Angeles Times.

"It's been mined to death and in some cases the quality control is not what it's supposed to be," Vaughn said. "People are just going to get bored of it."

It's a strong statement coming from a director whose superhero movie will open next summer along with "Captain America: The First Avenger," "Thor" and "Green Lantern."

But let's see if the director's take on the "X-Men" franchise will be better than Brett Ratner's 2006 film "X-Men: The Last Stand." I'm a fan of Vaughn's last two films namely "Kick-Ass" and the criminally-underseen "Stardust." So I have hopes...

"The Other Guys" Topples "Inception" for No. 1 Box Office Spot

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg steal the box office crown from Leonardo DiCaprio. Viewers put "The Other Guys" at the top of the box office heap.

The buddy cop flick or "copedy" starring Ferrel and Wahlberg took the No. 1 spot with $35.6 million. Ferrel returned to the loving arms of writer-director Adam McKay, the actor's collaborator in "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" (it's still their biggest opening with $47 million when it debuted in August 2006).

Ferrel and McCay also worked in "Step Brothers" which opened with $30.9 million in July 2008, and "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" which opened in July 2004 with $28.4 million.

"The Office Guy" kicked "Inception" to No. 2 with $18.6 million. Christopher Nolan's masterpiece had been the top flick for the past three weeks, and has now made $227.7 million.

Meanwhile, "Step Up 3D" opened with $15.5 million placing at No. 3. (For my review of "Step Up 3D" click here; for my interviews with the "Step Up 3D" dancers, cast, and director Jon Chu, click here).

The best part? "The Kids Are All Right" from Focus Features starring Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Mia Wasikowska, and Josh Hutcherson, finally entered the Top 10! I love this film, it's definitely one of my favorites this summer, maybe the year! (Check out my review of "The Kids Are All Right Here" right here, and my interviews with the cast here)

Here's the estimated Top 10 list of box office films for weekend of Aug. 6th:

1. "The Other Guys," $35.6 million.
2. "Inception," $18.6 million.
3. "Step Up 3-D," $15.5 million.
4. "Salt," $11.1 million.
5. "Dinner for Schmucks," $10.5 million.
6. "Despicable Me," $9.4 million.
7. "Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore," $6.9 million.
8. "Charlie St. Cloud," $4.7 million.
9. "Toy Story 3," $3 million.
10."The Kids Are All Right," $2.6 million.
