Brett Ratner to Produce the Oscars! Really?

The Academy must be really desperate! Ratings fell (this year's telecast was down 10% compared to 2010's), and the coveted demographic, adults 18 to 49, pretty much ignored the awards show.

So the Academy's answer? Let's bring someone who hasn't been nominated before produce the Oscars! Bring in Brett Ratner!

I don't know about you but I am not a fan of Ratner. He's a visual but shallow director in the vein of Michael Bay. But I guess the Academy believes that Ratner's razzle-dazzle technique will bring in the young 'uns.

But you know what's gonna happen? Next year's telecast will be more of the same! Why? Because Ratner will co-produce with veteran show producer Don Mischer. So the look and flavor may change, but the content will remain the same. Huh...just like a Ratner movie!

The stellar director of such classics as the "Rush Hour" movies promises that next year's Oscars will entail...comedy!!! Wow, I'm laughing already. Take a look at this excerpt from his phone interview with EW:

In the announcement, Dawn Hudson said you had “a really smart and fresh take for the show.” What did she mean?

BR: Oh God, I just got hired! You’ve got to give me a little bit of time. But I can tell you it entails comedy. The key to this show is making it funny. But respecting the pedigree and the old Hollywood history. Comedy is what I do. I know how to entertain people. I want to laugh when I’m watching a show like this. But I’m not looking to come in and shake it up and reinvent it. I can’t change the Academy; I can just do a great show.

And The Hollywood Reporter compiled the 10 best Twitter reactions to Ratner's Oscar producing. But here's my favorite:

"Brett Ratner producing the Oscars is like letting Thanos manage the Justice League - not just wrong 'side,' wrong UNIVERSE."
-- the_moviebob

Yes, wrong universe, I hear 'ya moviebob! But let's give Ratner the benefit of the doubt. Let's see on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, if Ratner, the Oscar producer who hasn't even directed live television, will be able to energize the Academy Awards!

It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's the First Picture of Henry Cavill as "Superman: Man of Steel!"

All I can say is fierce! And contrary to the "bulge" incident when Warner first released Brandon Routh's picture as the Man of Steel in 2006's "Superman Returns," Henry Cavill's red trunks is hidden :happy

So no tongue-wagging y'all!

This reboot is being directed by Zack Snyder (click here to see my interview with the director for "Sucker Punch" where he revealed some details about "Superman: Man of Steel) and produced by Christopher Nolan.

Cavill's co-stars are Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Julia Ormond, Russell Crowe, Chris Meloni, Harry Lennix and Laurence Fishburne.

Truth, justice, and the American way will be unleashed in theaters when "Superman: Man of Steel" debuts on June 14, 2013.

Oh, here's a closer look at Cavill:

You want closer you said?

Clint Eastwood's "Hoover" and Hanks/Bullock 9/11 Drama Get Release Dates!

Warner Bros. has announced that their upcoming Oscar bait, Clint Eastwood's Hoover" will be released on Nov. 9. Yay! I can't wait for this movie!

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as the iconic F.B.I. director J. Edgar Hoover. The script is written by "Milk's" Dustin Lance Black.

Warner will open the film on Nov. 9 in select cities, and expand it nationwide on Nov. 11.

Another Warner Oscar bait starring Oscar winners Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock from Oscar contender Stephen Daldry ("The Reader," "The Hours") is the drama "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close." This 9/11 drama will be released in limited markets Christmas Day to quality for the Oscars.

Expanding nationwide on Jan. 20, 2012, "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" is about a boy who believes that his father (Hanks), a victim of 9/11, left a final message for him. But his mother (Bullock) does not want to believe him, so the boy begins his journey in search of his father's message. Aw...

And now, for a non-Oscar bait topic, Warner also revealed that the sequel to "Journey to the Center of the Earth" will have its release date moved from Jan. 27, 2012 to Feb. 10, 2012. Starring Josh Hutcherson, Vanessa Hudgens, Dwayne Johnson, Michael Caine, and Kristin Davis, is now called "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island."
