Barry Manilow writes the songs that make the whole world sing! That is essentially the plot of a new film featuring Manilow's songs.
And Manilow is getting help from R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe and Tom Hanks.
Stipe's Single Cell productions and Hanks' Playtone are teaming up to develop a romantic comedy that will use Manilow's songs.
The production has been given the go signal by the iconic Manilow, and now, the producers are going to take the project to Universal where Playtone produced the blockbuster "Mamma Mia!."
But this new Manilow-centric movie will not have the similar theme of "Mamma Mia!" where Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan suddenly sing to the tune of Abba songs to advance the plot forward.
The Manilow film will be a character-driven romantic comedy with intersecting storylines involving Manilow fans. They're all going to Las Vegas where Manilow will headline Mandalay Bay one weekend. Call it "The Hangover" for the Manilow crowd.
Of course, Manilow's music will star as one of the film's characters, and the singer will also perform a few songs.
There's no writer hired yet, but Variety says Manilow will help shape the project.
I told you, he writes the songs that make the whole world sing!

Kim Catrall's Samantha is getting a new hunk in the form of Max Ryan.
The English-born actor will join the "Sex and the City" sequel, filming right now. He will play the role of Rikard, an European architect who becomes the tasty apple of Samantha's eye.
Ryan is no stranger to Hollywood though. He was seen recently in Paul W.S. Anderson's "Death Race." He also starred as Dante in "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen."
Michael Patrick King, writer/director of the original "Sex and the City" feature is returning, and he's begun shooting in New York with the famous quartet Sarah Jessica Parker, Catrall, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon.
The Warner Bros/New Line production is set to open May 28 of next year.

Rapunzel, the Grimm fairy tale princess famous for her 70 feet of golden hair, is joining the ranks of the Disney Princess merchandise because she's getting her own movie, thank you very much!
And Mandy Moore is set to let her hair down for she's the chosen one to voice the princess in the planned Walt Disney Pictures Digital 3-D animated musical-action-adventure "Rapunzel."
Joining Moore is Zachary Levi, star of NBC's "Chuck." He will be the voice of the dashing bandit and Rapunzel's love interest. The plot revolves around the teenage princess running away from her captor with the bandit on her side.
Byron Howard and Nathan Greno are set to direct, and Roy Conli will be producing. The great Alan Menken ("Beauty and the Beast," "Aladdin") will compose the film's music.
Once upon a time for a very long time, Disney has been trying to make a film about Rapunzel. The studio even unsuccessfully developed a project titled "Rapunzel Unbraided." But not until John Lasseter came aboard as chief creative officer at Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios has the project been given new life.
"Rapunzel" is set to open during the holiday of 2010.

There are lots of Disney news this morning because John Lasseter was in London's Leicester Square giving details of upcoming Disney/Pixar productions. One of them is "Cars 2" set to open summer of 2011.
The sequel will focus on Larry the Cable Guy's Mater.
Empireonline is saying:
The story sees Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson), his pit team and new pit boss Mater head around the world for the Race of Champions, to take place in five different countries and involve the champions of different disciplines like Formula One and rally driving. First up is a race in Tokyo, starting at Mount Fuji and heading downtown; then there's a German race through the Black Forest; then "Porto Corsa" in Italy, which is based partly on the Monte Carlo Grand Prix; then a 24-hour race around Paris (so somewhat like Le Mans then) and finally a thrilling climax in London, approaching Buckingham Palace (where the guards appear to be Land Rovers).
Furthermore, Mater will be involved in a case of mistaken identity but will end up saving the life of a British secret agent called Finn McMissile, an Aston Martin lookalike. Mater's plotline is a spy thriller that will conclude at the Buckingham Palace.
Empireonline further revealed that, "Along the way there are towtruck-abroad pictures to be taken at the Oktoberfest in Germany (where Mater wears "Materhosen") and harassing the aforementioned Palace Guards."
"Ratatouille" producer Brad Lewis is directing "Cars 2" and this will be his Pixar-directing debut. The main cast of the original are set to return, but no word yet on who's going to voice Finn McMissile. Can we suggest Daniel Craig? Or Roger Moore? Or Sean Connery? Or Timothy Dalton? Yeah, former Bonds!

Just call his character Pricklepants, Mr. Pricklepants.
The former 007 star will be voicing the role of Mr. Pricklepants in the upcoming Disney/Pixar threequel "Toy Story 3!"
The character is a hedgehog toy with acting aspirations! Sounds fun! Now, if they let Dalton keep his British accent, he will be the first Brit to be featured in the "Toy Story" franchise, notwithstanding Andi Peters' cameo in "Toy Story 2."
"Toy Story 3" tells the story of Andy, who's now college-bound, and of course, his old toys have been put away in a safe place up in the attic. Woody (Tom Hanks) is saved though, Andy decides to take the toy with him to college. But eventually, the other toys are sent to a daycare center, where they are abused by the little kids.
It's now up to Woody and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) to save the day and find a new, safe haven for the toys.
"Toy Story 3" comes out June 18 of next year, and here's the complete list of voice actors:
Tom Hanks -- Woody (voice)
Michael Keaton -- Ken (voice)
Joan Cusack -- Jessie the Yodeling Cowgirl (voice)
Tim Allen -- Buzz Lightyear (voice)
John Ratzenberger -- Hamm the Piggy Bank (voice)
Wallace Shawn -- Rex the Green Dinosaur (voice)
