Producers Guild of America Expands Nominations to 10 Films!

Similar to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences, the Producers Guild of America has expanded nominations for its top feature film category to 10!

The Darryl F. Zanuck producer of the year award will be expanded from 5 to 10.

PGA president Marshall Herskovitz says, "The PGA board approved the expansion of our best-produced picture category nominations to support our colleagues at the Academy, but also because we feel it better represents the unprecedented diversity of films being produced today."

Nominations for the Producers Guild of America award will be announced January 5th. The ceremony will take place January 24th at the Hollywood Palladium.

"Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" Enjoys Delicious Box-Office Weekend! See Complete Top 10 List!

Money fell from the sky for Sony's "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs!" The 3-D animated family comedy debuted at No. 1 with $30.1 million leading this weekend's films.

It was a busy weekend at the movies, and the fun family treat beat Matt Damon, Jennifer Aniston, and Megan Fox at the box-office.

Coming in at No. 2 was Steven Soderbergh's "The Informant!." Matt Damon famously gained 30 lbs to play a bipolar whistle blower and the actor literally disappeared in his role! Phenomenal job!

"The Informant!" made $10.5 million, slightly beating previous weekend's No. 1 film, "I Can Do Bad By Myself." The Tyler Perry film fell down 57% to No. 3 with $10 million.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Aniston's romantic dramedy with Aaron Eckhart called "Love Happens" came in fourth with $8.5 million. Many insiders are saying that viewers are tired of seeing Aniston in romantic comedies. This is another failure for Universal Pictures.

And then, there's "Jennifer's Body." Being sold as Megan Fox's first starring role failed to attract its teenage male demographics. The much publicized girl-on-girl kiss between Fox and Amanda Seyfried did not entice its viewers.

It's surprising for a horror film with names like Diablo Cody (the "Juno" scriptwriter wrote the script and executive-produced "Jennifer's Body") and Fox to fail at the box-office. But, "Jennifer's Body" is a flop with a paltry $6.8 million box-office take. It's the lowest among the weekend's new batch of films.

Here's the estimated Top 10 list of box-office films for weekend of Sept. 18:

1. "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs," $30.1 million.

2. "The Informant!" $10.5 million.

3. "I Can Do Bad All By Myself," $10 million.

4. "Love Happens," $8.5 million.

5. "Jennifer's Body," $6.8 million.

6. "9," $5.5 million.

7. "Inglourious Basterds," $3.6 million.

8. "All About Steve," $3.4 million.

9. "Sorority Row," $2.5 million.

10. "The Final Destination," $2.4 million.

Dick Cook, Walt Disney Chairman, Stepping Down Immediately!

Oh no! The sweetest man in Hollywood, Dick Cook, is stepping down immediately as Walt Disney Studios chairman :sad

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Cook multiple times in many events, and he is truly a sweet person. He started with Disney as a ride operator on Disneyland's steam train so he worked his way to the top.

Variety is saying Cook is stepping down, but Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood is saying he was fired. Either or, Cook will be missed!

Take a look at the official statements from Cook and Robert Iger, President and CEO of the Walt Disney Company:

September 18, 2009

STATEMENT FROM RICHARD W. COOK, CHAIRMAN, THE WALT DISNEY STUDIOS

I am stepping down from my role as chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, effective immediately.

I have loved every minute of my 38 years that I have worked at Disney…from the beginning as a ride operator on Disneyland’s steam train and monorail to my position as chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. To wrap up my Disney experience in a neatly bundled statement is close to impossible. But what I will say is, during my time at the Studio, we have achieved many industry and Company milestones. Our talent roster is simply the best in the business. I believe our slate of upcoming motion pictures is the best in our history. But most of all, I love the people, my colleagues, my teammates, who are the most talented, dedicated and loyal folks in the world. I know that I leave the Studio in their exceptional hands.

I have been contemplating this for some time now and feel it’s the right time for me to move on to new adventures…and in the words of one of my baseball heroes, Yogi Berra, “If you come to a fork in the road, take it.”

STATEMENT FROM ROBERT A. IGER, PRESIDENT AND CEO, THE WALT DISNEY COMPANY

“Throughout his distinguished 38-year Disney career, Dick Cook’s outstanding creative instincts and incomparable showmanship have truly enriched this company and significantly impacted Disney’s great legacy,” said Disney CEO Bob Iger. “We thank Dick for his tremendous passion for Disney, and his many accomplishments and contributions to The Walt Disney Studios, including a very promising upcoming film slate. On behalf of everyone at Disney, we wish him the best with all the future has to offer.”
