Sacha Baron Cohen to Star as Freddie Mercury!

From "Borat" to "Bruno," and now to Freddie Mercury, Sacha Baron Cohen has signed on to star in a movie about the great Queen frontman. Scriptwriter Peter Morgan, the guy who gave us "The Queen," is tackling music royalty Queen and the flamboyant superstar Mercury who died of AIDS-related causes in 1991.

The still untitled project will end with Queen's memorable performance at the 1985 Live Aid concert.

GK Films is producing with Robert De Niro's Tribeca Productions and Queen Films. There's no director attached yet, but production is due to start next year.

Apparently, the band is 100% behind the project, and I think Cohen is perfect casting! He has facial similarities with the singer, and the comedian has proven he could sing with his performance in Tim Burton's "Sweeney Todd."

"The Town" Movie Review -- How Many Kisses Does Ben Affleck Get?

Ben Affleck, the director, or Ben Affleck the actor. Who is better? Check out my review of "The Town," starring and directed by Ben Affleck.

Here's more info on "The Town" from Yahoo:

Doug MacRay is an unrepentant criminal, the de facto leader of a group of ruthless bank robbers who pride themselves in stealing what they want and getting out clean. With no real attachments, Doug never has to fear losing anyone close to him.

But that all changed on the gang's latest job, when they briefly took a hostage--bank manager, Claire Keesey. Though they let her go unharmed, Claire is nervously aware that the robbers know her name and where she lives. But she lets her guard down when she meets an unassuming and rather charming man named Doug not realizing that he is the same man who only days earlier had terrorized her.

The instant attraction between them gradually turns into a passionate romance that threatens to take them both down a dangerous, and potentially deadly, path.

Yes Folks, the Joaquin Phoenix Documentary is a Hoax, Casey Affleck Revealed!

Affleck, the guy behind "I'm Still Here," the supposed documentary chronicling Joaquin Phoenix's reinvention from actor to rapper, admitted that it's all not true! That's it's all just...performance art!

He got me fooled! But then again, we all kinda knew that right?

In an interview with the New York Times, Affleck came clean, saying "It’s a terrific performance, it’s the performance of his career.”

The article further said:

Virtually none of it was real. Not even the opening shots, supposedly of Mr. Phoenix and his siblings swimming in a water hole in Panama. That, Mr. Affleck said, was actually shot in Hawaii with actors, then run back and forth on top of an old videocassette recording of “Paris, Texas” to degrade the images.

And the only genuine thing in the film?

That was a snippet of a home movie that showed Mr. Phoenix and his very young siblings performing, Jackson Five style, on the streets of Los Angeles.

I'm interviewing Mr. Casey Affleck tomorrow morning, so we'll chastise him. And of course, I'll post our lovely interview right here on mannythemovieguy.com

Nicole Kidman Joins Oscar Race with "Rabbit Hole," Film Acquired by Lionsgate

It's one of the most hottest properties at the Toronto International Film Festival and now, Lionsgate has acquired North American distribution rights to "Rabbit Hole" according to TheWrap.

Based on a Broadway play, the plot revolves around a happily married couple (Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart) whose lives turn tragic when their 4-year old son died in a traffic accident. Drama! But there's some redemptive qualities to the project, and the play is a tearjerker!

Directed by John Cameron Mitchell ("Hedwig and the Angry Inch") and adapted for the big screen by playwright David Lindsay-Abaire, Lionsgate is planning to provide a big Oscar campaign for the movie. And why not? Kidman is an Oscar winner and an Academy darling.

Kate Winslet Channels Joan Crawford in "MIldred Pierce!" Check Out Trailer

This is melodrama at its finest! But then again, the source material was a 1941 James M. Cain novel of the same name, which became a 1945 Academy Award-winning film starring Joan Crawford. The actress won an Oscar that year, and Eve Arden (Best Supporting Actress), Ann Blyth (Best Supporting Actress), Ernest Haller (Best Cinematography, Black-and-White), and Ranald MacDougall (Best Screenplay) were all nominated. The film was nominated for Best Picture as well but lost to "The Lost Weekend."

The film is a you-go-girl kinda movie where Mildred Pierce Beragon, frustrated by her unemployed cheating husband, seek out to support herself and her children. But then, there's her ungrateful child named Veda which is played by Evan Rachel Wood -- I love her!

Winslet plays Mildred Pierce, and judging from the trailer, she's great, but I'm wondering how this material will play with this generation now. It'll be interesting to see what director Todd Haynes does with the source.

Here's the trailer:
