James Franco and Director Danny Boyle Talk About "127 Hours!"

I sat down with director Danny Boyle and actor James Franco for an interview for their new film “127 Hours.” Franco gave one of the best performances of the year playing Aron Ralston, the real-life canyoneer who resorted to cutting off his right arm after being trapped under a boulder near Moab, Utah for 5 days.

Franco has always been a great interviewee (I enjoyed talking to him for “Milk”) and Boyle, one of the best directors of his generation, is insightful. We talked about:

• The challenges for Boyle in going from the populated city of Mumbai for “Slumdog Millionaire” to the claustrophobic canyon for “127 Hours.”
• What did he see in Franco that made him the best Ralston?
• How did Franco prepare for the role both physically and mentally?

Scriptwriter Simon Beaufoy Reveals "127 Hours" Secrets! Check Out Our Interview!

Simon Beaufoy won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2009 for “Slumdog Millionaire.” This year, he reteams with “Slumdog” director, Danny Boyle, for another thought-provoking and captivating film! I love this movie!

Based on the true story of Aron Ralston as chronicled in his book, “Between a Rock and a Hard Place,” “127 Hours” captured the harrowing tale of Ralston, trapped under a boulder while canyoneering alone near Moab, Utah. We’ve all heard what happened next – Ralston resorted to cutting off his right arm to free himself.

Ralston’s tale was harrowing, but the film provided a smart, enjoyable, and entertaining experience.

In this interview, Beaufoy and I talked about:

• What went through his mind when Boyle asked him to co-write “127 Hours?”
• Is the film more like a celebration of life rather than a tale of personal triumph?
• Working with Boyle for the second time.
• Has Boyle whispered “28 Days Later” threequel yet?
• How Boyle planned in shooting “127 Hours” using two different cinematographers – and incorporating the film stocks to be used on the script.
• How did he envision writing the “cutting off the arm” scene?
• Was the planned scene more gory than the final cut?
Transcendence!

Hilary Swank Talks About "Conviction!"

I love Hilary Swank! The two-time Academy Award winner is a down-to-earth and sweet person! I interviewed her for “Amelia” last year, and this year, I chatted with her for her new film “Conviction.” Swank plays the true-life character of Betty Anne Waters, a working mother whose love for her wrongfully convicted brother is so deep that she will do anything to help set him free.

The ensemble cast is great headed by Swank and Sam Rockwell who plays her brother, Kenny. Minnie Driver, Juliette Lewis, and Melissa Leo complete the cast.

In this interview, Swank and I talked about:

• What got her interested in the film both as an actress and as an executive producer?
• What’s her attraction to true-life stories?
• How did she prepare for the role?
• How did she pick the actors to work with?

Written by Pamela Gray and directed by Tony Goldwyn, “Conviction” is out in theaters right now.
