James Franco entered our pop culture landscape with his fine Golden Globe-winning performance as James Dean in a 2001 TV movie. Now, the actor wants to make a movie about Dean's "Rebel Without a Cause" co-star, Sal Mineo according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Franco has optioned film rights to a just-released biography of Mineo as a potential writing-directing vehicle. No word yet on whether he's going to star, and honestly, he should! He's perfect for the part!
Mineo became the youngest performer nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar for "Rebel." His promising life was cut short when he was murdered by a pizza deliveryman at age 37.
Mineo also had a conflicted sex life -- proposing marriage to Jill Haworth and keeping a secret affair with his male lover Courtney Burr. Artist and photographer Michael Gregg Michaud documented this in the book, "Sal Mineo: A Biography."
This is an intriguing project, and I can't wait for Franco (he will be nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor for "127 Hours") to work his magic behind the scenes. But he should star too! (Check out my interview with Franco for "127 Hours")

If you like the dazzling Cirque du Soleil shows, then you're in for a treat! Deadline is reporting that there will be a movie version of the popular show with James Cameron set to produce.
Andrew Adamson, the guy who gave us the first two "Chronicles of Narnia" movies and the first two "Shrek" films, is set to direct this hybrid film. It will be a combination of narrative storytelling and Cirque performances.
Huh? Narrative storytelling? The life of a circus performer perhaps?
What we do know is that the film will be marketed as a family film, and will be launched as a series. Adamson is a good storyteller though, so this may be worth the wait. Deadline is saying that the director is in New Zealand right now, shooting the narrative part of the film.
The project, which is about one-third completed, is being sold to major distributors right now. What are you waiting for Disney?

Cate Blanchett will don her Galadriel getup again for Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit." Blanchett was so mesmerizing as Galadriel in "The Lord of the Rings" films, and she will sure to light up the screen again as the Lady of Lothlorien.
Blanchett will join Ken Stott as the Dwarf Lord Balin, Sylvester McCoy as the wizard Radagast the Brown, and Mikael Persbrandt as the shape-shifter Beorn. Ryan Gage is set to play Drogo Baggins, Jed Brophy as dwarf Nori, and William Kircher as the dwarf Bifur.
Jackson will shoot "The Hobbit" in February, and was heard saying that Cate is "one of my favorite actors to work with and I couldn't be more thrilled to have her reprise the role she so beautifully brought to life in the earlier films."
The director co-wrote the script with Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Guillermo del Toro. Martin Freeman will play Bilbo Baggins aka the hobbit!
Will Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Andy Serkis as Gollum return to Middle Earth as well? You betcha!
