And so, another year of the Golden Globes has come to past.  Like each year, there are many surprises, controversies, and drama.  Especially now with the pandemic – gone were the drunken speeches (okay, maybe not), and hello Zoom glitches!  So what were some of the Golden Globes’ highlights?  Let’s count them down:

ACTING SURPRISES:  Heading to the Globes, the favorites were Frances McDormand and Carey Mulligan for Best Actress Drama, but Andra Day emerged the victor for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.”  We also thought that Maria Bakalova would win Best Actress Comedy for “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” because, well, she’s good, and among the nominees, her film is the only out and out comedy.  But Rosamund Pike’s less comical but nonetheless fierce and memorable performance as Marla Grayson for “I Care a Lot” took home the gold.  And then there’s Jodie Foster surprising everyone with her Best Supporting Actress win for “The Mauritanian” when experts predicted either Amanda Seyfried or Glenn Close.  But I adore Foster, and her wife too!

CHLOE ZHAO:  The “Nomadland” director becomes the second female filmmaker (after Barbra Streisand’s “Yentl” win in 1984) to win the Best Director award, AND becomes the second person of Asian descent after Ang Lee (“Brokeback Mountain,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”) to win, ALSO “Nomadland” becomes the first Best Picture winner directed by a female filmmaker, or Asian for that matter!  Go Chloe!

DANIEL KALUUYA:  So the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) is trying to get over its inclusivity problem, and then…Daniel Kaluuya could not be heard after winning the Best Supporting Actor award.  Bad, bad coincidence?

SAL WINS BEST ANIMATED FILM:  That’s SAAAAL according to Tracy Morgan.  Sorry “Soul!”

TAYLOR SIMONE LEDWARD:  I cried at the heartbreaking speech of Chadwick Boseman’s widow after accepting his posthumous Best Actor win for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”

JANE FONDA:  I realized that the Cecil B. DeMille Award honoree is a true goddess!  And her speech is on point!  Read her full speech here.

NORMAN LEAR:  And I also realized that the Carol Burnett Award honoree is a forward-thinking showrunner who, at 99, still believes in the power of laughter!

TINA FEY AND AMY POEHLER:  They rock, they’re funny, and they kept the show going…and…they’re on two different coasts!  Amazing!

HFPA’s INCLUSIVITY PROBLEM:  The most they did during the award show was to trot out three HFPA members – two female, two non-white – and make empty promises for improvement.  I didn’t buy it, and no one in the audience did either!

And on that note, here are the winners of the 78th Golden Globe Awards!  The good news?  The show was on time!  How about that?  Oh, and in case you’re wondering, I got 19 out of 26 correct from my predictions.  So there!
