Bad Sequel Idea #2 -- "Johnny English 2"

The first "Johnny English" starring Rowan Atkinson released in 2003 cost $40 million but only earned $28 million. So why is Universal Pictures bringing back the bumbling British spy? Because worldwide, the comedy made $161 million, and that's enough for the sequel to be greenlit.

Apparently, Universal is dumping all its dramatic Oscar-bait thrillers in favor of cheap, safe comedies! The studio just scrapped the dramatic thriller "Cartel" and greenlit two comedies -- One, a Judd Apatow produced film starring Kristen Wiig, and the Ryan Reynolds-Jason Bateman buddy vehicle "The Change-Up."

See what happened folks? Since you didn't pay attention to recent Universal action-dramas like "Public Enemies," "State of Play" and "Green Zone," now, we must settle for "Johnny English 2!"

Atkinson will be back for the second film, and Oliver Parker is set to direct from a script by Hamish McColl (he wrote 2007's "Mr. Bean's Holiday").

Universal wants to start shooting in August.
