It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Henry Cavill! "Tudors" Actor to Star as "Superman: Man of Steel"

British actor Henry William Dalgliesh Cavill, Henry Cavill for short, has been announced as our new Man of Steel! The actor, who has been the frontrunner for the "Superman" role, did not know that he had gotten the role until this morning. That's how super-secretive producer Christopher Nolan, director Zack Snyder, and Warner Bros. have been. (Check out my interview with Snyder for "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole")

Cavill has appeared in the films "The Count of Monte Cristo," and "Stardust," but is best known for his role of Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk, on Showtime's "The Tudors."

Getting the plum role in "Superman: Man of Steel" is somewhat ironic since the 27-year old actor has tried out for superhero roles before. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Cavill was a leading contender for "Superman" when Warners was reviving the franchise in the mid-2000s. He was on McG's shortlist until the director was replaced by Bryan Singer who chose Brandon Routh instead in "Superman Returns."

Cavill also tried for the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman that eventually went to Christian Bale in Nolan's "Batman Begins."

The Hollywood Reporter further stated that Cavill's closest competitor was fellow British actor Matthew Goode who was also being seen for the "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" part that eventually went to Benjamin Walker.

Other actors who met with Warners and Nolan were Matthew Bomer ("White Collar"), Armie Hammer ("The Social Network"), Joe Manganiello ("True Blood"), and Colin O'Donaghue ("The Rite"). (Check out my interview with Hammer for "The Social Network" where I asked him the "Superman" question)

So now, the famous Nolan veil of secrecy has been uncovered. Cavill will now don the famous blue tights!
