Andrew Ahn Explains Reimagining “The Wedding Banquet”
Based on Ang Lee’s memorable 1993 classic “The Wedding Banquet,” Andrew Ahn decides to update the story with a game cast namely Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, Han Gi-chan, Joan Chen, and Oscar-winner Youn Yuh-jung (“Minari”). Marriage was at the heart of the original story but 32 years later, same-sex marriage is now a reality and Ahn and co-writer James Schamus (who also co-wrote the original) updated the script for this modern love story.
And this I can tell you, the 2025 version gives justice to the 1993 original!
In this interview, we talked about Ahn’s interest in reimagining the film, his cast, and what he hopes for viewers to get after watching the film.
“The Wedding Banquet” is being released by Bleecker Street Media in theaters on April 18th.
Oscar-Winner Youn Yuh-jung and Han Gi-chan Talk “The Wedding Banquet”
It was an honor chatting it up with Oscar-winner Youn Yuh-jung (“Minari”) and Han Gi-chan for the fantastic “The Wedding Banquet.” By the way, the film made me cry buckets and laughed out loud too!
In this interview, we talked about their interest in starring in the film and their characters’ dynamics. Watch for Yuh-jung to be nominated for her role in here, a conservative matriarch who might have a change of heart.
Lily Gladstone and Kelly Marie Tran Talk “The Wedding Banquet”
I had a great time talking to both Lily Gladstone and Kelly Marie Tran. They play a committed lesbian couple in the sweet and funny “The Wedding Banquet” from Andrew Ahn. Both are very articulate in dissecting their characters, the social implications, and why the world needs “The Wedding Banquet” right now.
