It’s Oscar nominations time and Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” makes history with an astounding total of 16 nominations including Best Picture!
The nominees for the 98th Academy Awards were announced this morning with Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”) and Lewis Pullman (“Thunderbolts,” “Top Gun: Maverick”). And just like every year, I get up early, waiting with baited breath on who will get the prestigious Oscar nod. It’s my Super Bowl, and just like the beloved football game, there are many surprises. We’ll get to those below but for now, here are the Oscar nominations. We’ll find out the winners on March 15th for the 98th Oscars with Conan O’Brien returning as the host.

SURPRISES
SURPRISE: “F1” receiving a Best Picture nod. I enjoyed the film even though it felt like “Top Gun” with wheels!
SURPRISE: Joachim Trier, “Sentimental Value” (director) – the Academy truly loved this family drama centered on making movies.
SURPRISE: Kate Hudson, “Song Sung Blue” (lead actress) – Truly deserving. She remained the heart of the film.
SURPRISE: Delroy Lindo, “Sinners” (supporting actor) – Another truly deserving nomination.
SURPRISE: Elle Fanning, “Sentimental Value” (supporting actress) – This is a big win for the “Sentimental Value” cast who was largely snubbed by SAG-AFTRA voters for their Actors Awards.
SNUBS
SNUB: “Wicked: For Good” (picture) – The sequel made less money than the first film, but really, Academy voters should have seen the film the second time. It was bursting with energy when I re-watched it, something that was amiss on the first viewing.
SNUB: “Avatar: Fire and Ash” (picture) – Franchise fatigue anyone?
SNUB: “It Was Just an Accident” (picture) – Yes it received a nod for the International Feature category but not in Best Picture where fellow International Feature nominees “The Secret Agent” and “Sentimental Value” received nods.
SNUB: Guillermo del Toro, “Frankenstein” (director) – 9 nominations for “Frankenstein” but previous Oscar best director winner, Guillermo del Toro, was ignored! At least he has the Directors Guild of America nomination.
SNUB: Amanda Seyfried, “The Testament of Ann Lee” (lead actress) – She was good in the film. She sang, full of emotions even, but both SAG and the Academy ignored her performance.
SNUB: Cynthia Erivo, “Wicked: For Good” (lead actress) – She was good, but with “Wicked for Good” ignored, so was Erivo and Grande.
SNUB: Chase Infiniti, “One Battle After Another” (lead actress) – Nominated for SAG but not for the Academy. And she was so darn memorable! And very sweet in person too!
SNUB: Paul Mescal, “Hamnet” (supporting actor) – A movie about the inspiration behind William Shakespear’s “Hamlet” but no love for the actor who played the beloved bard.
SNUB: Ariana Grande, “Wicked: For Good” (supporting actress) – Back in November, if you asked me who I would love to win for this category, it was a toss-up between Ariana Grande as Glinda in “Wicked for Good” or Amy Madigan for “Weapons.” Now, we’re down to Madigan as my pick! She still has a SAG nomination though.
SNUB: Odessa A’zion, “Marty Supreme” (supporting actress) – Just like Chase Infiniti for “One Battle After Another,” Odessa A’zion received a SAG nomination but not an Oscar nod.
