Reclaiming the Narrative: Inside the Eraserheads’ Journey with Ely Buendia and Maria Diane Ventura
For decades, the story of the Eraserheads was a mixture of urban legend, cryptic lyrics, and the lingering sting of a public breakup. In my recent interview with frontman Ely Buendia and director Maria Diane Ventura, we went beyond the “myth and the mess” to discuss their award-winning documentary, Eraserheads: Combo on the Run.
The film, which recently made history as the widest North American theatrical release for a Filipino documentary, isn’t just a concert movie; it’s a “comprehensive deconstruction” of the band’s humanity and their path to reconciliation.
A Therapeutic Reckoning
Director Maria Diane Ventura, who also produced the band’s massive 2022 Huling El Bimbo reunion concert, shared that the project began spontaneously after she witnessed a rehearsal and felt the weight of the band’s unresolved history. During our talk, she described the three-year production as a “social experiment” in healing.
- Vulnerability: Ventura noted how the band members, notorious for being “aloof and closed off,” finally allowed themselves to be vulnerable on camera.
- Healing through Expression: The documentary captures the evolution of the members as they “unloaded” years of unspoken tensions, a process Ely Buendia described as more than just nostalgia—it was a chance to finally own the narrative.
Breaking the Silence
One of the most poignant parts of our conversation centered on the band’s 2002 breakup. For years, fans only had hearsay. In the film, Ely reflects on his emotional struggles, including the pivotal moment he collapsed on stage, and the differing reactions within the band that eventually led to their dissolution.
“We’re here to stay,” Ely declared during our interview, echoing his sentiment from recent press conferences. The documentary serves as the bridge between their “punks” beginnings at UP Diliman in 1989 and their current status as icons who can still unite a polarized nation.
“Eraserheads: Combo on the Run” is now showing in North American theaters.
