Manny the Movie Guy sits down with Kristen Stewart, Alia Shawkat & Dylan Meyer for ‘The Wrong Girls’

The Wrong Girls (in theaters August 14 from Neon) is the wild, weed-soaked buddy comedy we’ve been waiting for. Written and directed by Dylan Meyer in her feature debut, it stars Stewart and Shawkat as Frankie and Molly — two codependent best friends living paycheck to paycheck and bong-rip to bong-rip. A case of mistaken identity hands them a briefcase full of glowing experimental psychedelics, and suddenly these “wrong girls” are dealing with telepathy, judgmental talking cats (voiced by Seth Rogen and Kumail Nanjiani), Danish scientists, and pure chaos. LaKeith Stanfield, Kate McKinnon, Geena Davis, Tony Hale, and Zack Fox round out the stacked cast.

I caught up with the trio and the energy was pure joy.

Dylan Meyer on her directorial debut

Dylan has been carrying this script for over a decade. It started as a love letter to her real-life friendship with producing partner Maggie McLean — those long, hazy days of co-signing each other’s bad decisions and ducking adulthood. “Frankie and Molly are codependent boneheads who have spent the last 10 years blissfully in a fog of weed smoke,” she told me with a grin. “It’s a love letter to wayward chaotic women and the essential platonic partnerships that prop them up. Giant squids, Danish hitmen, talking cats, and supernatural abilities… but the emotional story is pure memoir.”

Making the jump to the director’s chair felt natural once Kristen pushed her. The script is actually what first brought Dylan and Kristen together years ago. “Her confidence really pushed me to get over some of my own imposter syndrome,” Dylan shared. Watching her own words come alive with this cast has been a trip in the best way.

Kristen has never been one to play it safe, and leaning into pure, unapologetic silliness with The Wrong Girls feels like a full-circle celebration. “It’s a stoner girl comedy, and it’s really f—ing stupid,” she laughed. “I think you’ll like it.”

Being directed by Dylan? Kristen lit up. After years of knowing this story inside and out (and producing the film alongside her), stepping onto set under her wife’s guidance felt electric and intimate. “She’s teaching us all how to be good stoners and save the world,” Alia joked at one point, but Kristen’s pride was clear. There’s a special shorthand when the person calling “action” knows your every rhythm — and when that person is also the love of your life, the trust runs deep. Kristen has always chased roles that feel alive and a little dangerous. This one just happens to come with a personal director’s chair and a whole lot of laughter.

Alia Shawkat on the chemistry and the friendship

Alia Shawkat and Kristen Stewart were already friends before cameras rolled, and that real-life ease jumps off the screen. “We just get each other,” Alia said. Their onscreen partnership as Molly and Frankie is pure chaos chemistry — the kind of best-friend energy where one look says “we’re about to make this so much worse… and I love it.”

Offscreen, the three of them (Dylan included) kept the set feeling like an extended hang. Alia described the shoot as joyful and free, full of the same playful, slightly feral spirit the movie celebrates. “Wrong girls miss flights, don’t know where their birth certificates are, get caught by their bosses peeing in bushes,” Dylan has said of the vibe. Alia and Kristen lean all the way into that messiness, and the friendship between them makes every ridiculous beat land with heart.
