Hollywood never sleeps — and neither, apparently, does movie news. From a painful Tom Cruise box-office opening to Marvel reclaiming a piece of movie history, here are the biggest film stories breaking right now.

💣 TOM CRUISE’S “DIGGER” IS IN DEEP TROUBLE

Ouch. Tom Cruise’s ambitious dark comedy “Digger,” directed by Oscar winner Alejandro González Iñárritu, opened to just $8 million domestically and about $20 million worldwide.

That would be troublesome for any major studio release, but “Digger” reportedly cost somewhere around $160 million to $180 million to make, with substantial additional marketing costs. Industry estimates now suggest the film could lose Warner Bros. $150 million or more theatrically.

It’s one of Cruise’s weakest openings in decades — and a reminder that even one of Hollywood’s last true movie stars isn’t bulletproof.

👀 MEANWHILE, “VERITY” WINS THE WEEKEND

While “Digger” struggled, Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson had much better news.

The Colleen Hoover adaptation “Verity” debuted at No. 1 with approximately $32.6 million domestically and $62.5 million worldwide.

Even more interesting: reviews haven’t exactly been glowing, but audiences showed up anyway. The movie reportedly cost around $40 million, meaning this one is already looking much healthier financially.

Never underestimate Colleen Hoover readers.

🏆 “AVENGERS: ENDGAME” JUST BEAT “AVATAR” — AGAIN

The box-office crown has changed hands.

Following its “Encore” theatrical re-release, Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” has reached approximately $2.925 billion worldwide, narrowly passing James Cameron’s “Avatar,” which stands at roughly $2.923 billion.

That makes “Endgame” the highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide once again.

These two movies have basically been playing box-office ping-pong for years.

🦸 JAMES GUNN IS ALREADY WRITING HIS NEXT MOVIE

James Gunn apparently doesn’t believe in downtime.

The DC Studios boss says he’s already writing his next film, even though “Superman: Man of Tomorrow” doesn’t arrive until July 9, 2027.

Gunn also revealed that an assembly cut of the upcoming Superman sequel has been completed. David Corenswet returns as Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and the new adventure brings Brainiac into the story.

What Gunn is writing next? He’s not telling us yet.

🎬 HOLLYWOOD’S MEGA-MERGER IS GETTING REAL

One of Hollywood’s biggest corporate shake-ups is taking shape.

David Ellison has unveiled the senior leadership team that will oversee the newly combined Paramount-Warner Bros. entertainment empire under Skydance, bringing executives from both companies into the new structure.

The lineup includes Paramount film chiefs Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein along with Warner veterans including Casey Bloys and JB Perrette.

Translation: behind the scenes, Hollywood’s power map is being redrawn right now.

🤖 THE SAM ALTMAN MOVIE JUST GOT EVEN WEIRDER

Luca Guadagnino’s “Artificial,” starring Andrew Garfield as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, already sounded like one of Hollywood’s stranger upcoming projects.

Now Altman says the production actually filmed outside his house — and that he spotted Garfield portraying him.

Altman says he even noticed that Garfield walked like him, describing the whole experience as feeling like some kind of bizarre simulation glitch.

You can’t make this stuff up. Although apparently Hollywood can make a movie about it.

🍸 COULD “HOUSE OF THE DRAGON” GIVE US THE NEXT BOND VILLAIN?

It’s James Bond Day, so naturally the rumor mill is working overtime.

“House of the Dragon” star Ewan Mitchell is reportedly being eyed for a villain role in the next James Bond movie, which is being developed under Amazon MGM.

Important caveat: this is still a casting rumor, not a confirmed deal.

Still — Aemond Targaryen versus 007? I can see it.

🎭 JACK O’CONNELL HAS ANOTHER MOVIE

Jack O’Connell and Odessa A’zion are set to lead “The End of the World as We Know It,” the new feature from Ross White and Tom Berkeley, the Oscar- and BAFTA-winning filmmakers behind the short “An Irish Goodbye.”

O’Connell’s increasingly packed dance card continues to make him one of the more interesting actors to watch right now.

🏅 THE 2027 OSCAR RACE KEEPS GROWING

Syria has officially selected “The Other Side of the Sun” as its entry for Best International Feature at the upcoming Academy Awards.

Tawfik Sabouni’s documentary examines the notorious Saydnaya Prison, where Sabouni himself was incarcerated. The selection marks Syria’s first Oscar submission since the fall of Bashar al-Assad and the first made by the country’s newly established Oscar committee.

The film has also secured U.S. distribution through Icarus Films.

🎥 AND FINALLY…

The domestic box office is approaching another milestone. Through this weekend, 2026 ticket sales stand at approximately $7.95 billion — about 19 percent ahead of the same point last year.

So despite the occasional very expensive “Digger”-sized crater, people are still going to the movies.

And that’s your Movie News Now. Check back because in Hollywood, give it five minutes and something else will happen.
