Miami is heating up, horror is laughing all the way to the bank, and one very expensive Tom Cruise movie is learning that star power doesn’t always guarantee box-office power.

Meanwhile, Javier Bardem has a delicious behind-the-scenes James Bond confession, Robert Pattinson is transforming again, and a Hollywood legend’s daughter is giving a new biopic her blessing.

Grab your coffee! Here’s your Manny’s Movie Minute!

1. MIAMI VICE ’85: MICHAEL B. JORDAN AND AUSTIN BUTLER ARE READY FOR ACTION!

Pastel suits, speedboats, and two seriously charismatic leading men? Yes, please!

Our first look at Miami Vice ’85 has arrived as production gets underway.

Michael B. Jordan steps into the role of Ricardo Tubbs, while Austin Butler takes on Sonny Crockett.

Joseph Kosinski, the filmmaker behind Top Gun: Maverick and F1, is directing from a screenplay by Dan Gilroy.

The ensemble includes Walton Goggins, John Leguizamo, Camila Morrone and Alden Ehrenreich.

The movie is scheduled to arrive in theaters May 19, 2028. TheWrap

MANNY’S TAKE: If anyone knows how to make engines roar and movie stars look impossibly cool, it’s Kosinski. Now give me the neon, the danger, and a soundtrack that refuses to leave my head!

See the first-look images at TheWrap.

2. ‘OTHER MOMMY’ TERRIFIES THE COMPETITION — EVEN WITH A D+ AUDIENCE GRADE!

Talk about a scary-good opening!

Jessica Chastain’s horror movie Other Mommy debuted at No. 1 with an estimated $27.5 million domestically and approximately $45.2 million worldwide.

And here’s the twist: audiences gave it a dreadful D+ CinemaScore!

Meanwhile, Verity landed in second place with approximately $11.5 million, followed by Resident Evil with $8.4 million.

Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning struggled with a $5.5 million opening.

Even more interesting? Forgotten Island is still hanging around the Top 10! AP News

MANNY’S TAKE: Horror fans clearly came for the scares, not the exit poll! But that D+ could make next weekend a real fright.

And congratulations to the Forgotten Island team! I had the pleasure of interviewing its filmmakers and voice stars, including H.E.R. and Liza Soberano.

3. ‘THE SOCIAL RECKONING’ STUMBLES — AND ‘DIGGER’ FACES AN EVEN BIGGER HOLE!

Not every prestige project is finding its audience.

Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning opened with just $5.5 million domestically, a disappointing start for the follow-up to The Social Network.

And the financial outlook for Digger is even rougher.

Tom Cruise’s Alejandro G. Iñárritu-directed satire made an estimated $3.2 million in its second domestic weekend, down approximately 60%.

Industry projections suggest the film’s eventual losses could reach roughly $245 million.

That’s a forecast, not a confirmed final loss. Variety Australia

MANNY’S TAKE: A-list talent can get a movie noticed. It cannot make audiences buy tickets. Hollywood, are you listening?

4. JAVIER BARDEM’S JAMES BOND CONFESSION IS DELICIOUSLY NAUGHTY!

Remember Javier Bardem’s unforgettable, flirtatious villain Silva in Skyfall?

At a London Film Festival conversation Sunday, Bardem revealed that he himself pushed for the character’s sexual tension with James Bond.

Director Sam Mendes was receptive, although he needed to consult the studio.

It’s a fascinating reminder that one unexpected acting choice can transform an already memorable villain into an icon. Variety Australia

MANNY’S TAKE: A Bond villain who wants more than world domination? Now THAT’S character motivation!

Bardem knew exactly how to make Silva impossible to forget.

5. ROBERT PATTINSON’S ‘PRIMETIME’ TRANSFORMATION GETS A NEW CLOSE-UP!

A newly shared camera test offers a behind-the-scenes look at Robert Pattinson becoming television journalist Chris Hansen for Primetime.

The footage accompanies news of the movie’s October 29 release in Australia and New Zealand. The film is already playing in U.S. theaters.

The performance has sparked debate, with Hansen publicly objecting to the movie’s depiction of him.

MANNY’S TAKE: Love the movie or question its choices, Pattinson never seems interested in playing it safe.

That’s why I keep watching.

6. KJ APA GETS THE JIMMY STEWART FAMILY SEAL OF APPROVAL!

Playing Jimmy Stewart is a tall order!

But Riverdale star KJ Apa is winning praise from someone who knows the Hollywood legend better than most: Stewart’s daughter, Kelly Stewart-Harcourt.

And here’s another interesting fact about Apa: the New Zealand-born actor is proudly part Samoan! His father is Samoan, and Apa himself received a traditional chiefly title in his family’s village.

From Riverdale heartthrob to portraying one of Hollywood’s most beloved icons, Apa is taking on a whole new challenge!

MANNY’S TAKE: Anyone can attempt an impersonation. Capturing a screen legend’s soul? That’s the real performance. And I’m rooting for Apa to pull it off!

7. THE ‘MUSK’ DOCUMENTARY STIRS UP A STUDIO DISPUTE!

Documentarian Alex Gibney says the studio behind his nearly four-hour film Musk hesitated over international release plans amid controversy surrounding its subject.

Gibney also says he tried to secure Elon Musk’s participation without success.

Importantly, the distributor has publicly maintained that it was always committed to releasing the movie and that its plans had not changed.

The documentary opened in a handful of U.S. theaters over the weekend. Variety Australia

MANNY’S TAKE: A documentary doesn’t need its subject’s blessing. But the questions surrounding its release are becoming a story of their own.
