After a one-year hiatus, the Golden Globes are back for its 80th awards show with comedian Jerrod Carmichael serving as the host.  They touched upon the scandal in the beginning of the show with Carmichael talking about the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s diversity problem.  “I’m here because I’m black,” Carmichael joked.

The HFPA struggled to bring back the glamor of the evening prior to the scandal, and for the most part, the drama surrounding who would win eclipsed the Globes’ image problem.  The biggest upset for me was Austin Butler (“Elvis”) stealing the Best Actor (Drama) award from frontrunner Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) who chose not to attend because of his past experience with HFPA.

There’s also Regina Hall throwing shade at Kevin Costner for not attending the event because of the rain. “He’s sheltering in place in Santa Barbara,” Hall quipped.

The big movie winner of the evening was “The Banshees of Inisherin” taking home three trophies including Best Picture (Comedy/Musical), Screenplay, and Actor (Comedy/Musical) for Colin Farrell.

Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” took home the Best Picture Drama award with the beloved helmer winning Best Director thus solidifying the film’s status as this award season’s frontrunner.

Let’s see how these movie winners will fare at the Academy Awards.  For now, here’s the complete list of the winners and nominees (winners are bolded) of the 2023 Golden Globes.
