This week, Manny the Movie Guy dives into a chaotic mix of streaming scares and theatrical escapes. From a shark-infested Netflix thriller to a sun-drenched Italian romance, Manny breaks down what’s worth your time and which film takes home the coveted “Pick of the Week” honors.
Streaming Now: Thrash (Netflix)
If you’re a fan of the “creature feature” genre, Manny says Netflix’s new release Thrash is specifically for you. Directed by Tommy Wirkola, the film follows a category 5 hurricane that floods a coastal town, bringing with it a swarm of hungry sharks.
Manny notes that while the plot is predictable, it’s a fun, campy ride that delivers exactly what it promises. He particularly highlighted the performance of Phoebe Dynevor, who plays a nine-month pregnant woman fighting for survival in the rising waters. For those who enjoy B-movie thrills with a modern budget, Manny gives this one a solid recommendation for a “stay-at-home” movie night.
In Theaters: You, Me & Tuscany
Looking for a romantic getaway without the airfare? Manny suggests heading to the cinema for You, Me & Tuscany. This film follows Anna (Halle Bailey), who finds herself squatting in an empty Italian villa only to be mistaken for the owner’s fiancée by his charming family.
Manny describes it as a comforting, “paint-by-numbers” rom-com that feels like a throwback to the 2000s. While he admits the story—a mix of While You Were Sleeping and Tuscan “food porn”—doesn’t reinvent the wheel, the “combustible chemistry” between Halle Bailey and Regé-Jean Page makes it a winner. Manny gave it three out of four “soak up the sun kisses” for its sheer escapism and beautiful scenery.
Pick of the Week: Hamlet
Stealing the spotlight this week is the gritty new adaptation of Hamlet. This isn’t your standard period piece; this reimagining sets Shakespeare’s classic tragedy in the elite South Asian community of modern-day London.
Manny raved about Riz Ahmed in the title role, calling his performance intense and deeply introspective. Describing the film as dark, visually stunning, and filled with tension, Manny crowned it his Pick of the Week, awarding it three and a half out of four “to be or not to be kisses”.
Which of these will you be watching first—the sharks, the romance, or the revenge? Let us know if you’re team “stay-at-home thriller” or team “big-screen drama”!
