It’s a Story of Two Movies About Identity
This weekend, we’ve got two very different films hitting theaters — one struggling with its own identity crisis, and the other fully embracing what it is for one final, unforgettable ride. (Click here to see our video review of “Supergirl” and “Jackass: Best and Last)
Supergirl (Woman of Tomorrow) – 2.5 out of 4 Kisses
Milly Alcock is super as Kara Zor-El. She brings a traumatized, rebellious antihero energy to the role, and she absolutely carries the film on her shoulders. David Corenswet returns as Superman, and Jason Momoa steals every scene he’s in as the wild bounty hunter Lobo.
The supporting cast shines, but the villain is forgettable, and some of the third-act special effects feel a bit rough around the edges.
Director Craig Gillespie tries to blend an explosive rock opera vibe (think Guardians of the Galaxy) with gritty Mad Max-style Thunderdome chaos. The result? A somewhat disjointed and imbalanced movie that feels like it’s still searching for its true identity.
There’s a really good superhero movie buried in here — you just have to dig through the techno rubble to find it. Like our heroine’s superpowers aching to emerge, Supergirl shows flashes of brilliance but doesn’t quite take full flight.
Verdict: Not quite super. 2.5 out of 4 Kisses.
Jackass: Best and Last – 3 out of 4 Kisses (My Pick of the Week!)
Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Chris Pontius, and the whole crew are back for one last round of stunts, pranks, and things I absolutely cannot describe on this newscast.
About half the film is classic greatest hits, and half is brand-new, never-before-seen footage. The old stuff is still hilarious. The new stuff? Still completely insane.
What I didn’t expect was the real, genuine heart. Knoxville actually tears up on camera as the guys reflect on 26 years of broken bones, friendships, and doing the dumbest things imaginable together. It’s oddly beautiful.
This one knows exactly what it is and goes all out for the last laugh.
Verdict: My pick of the week! 3 out of 4 Kisses.
